That's a list where you can almost put together who has left. The camera operator is Andy, the account lead was that muzzie or poojeet who got an AMD upgrade who spent money on the gold teeth grill to be stereotypically south asian trash, the procurement coordinator could be that Tatyana girl (the normal looking one) which would be interesting if she left because that means the merch side is changing/downsizing,..

What they are hiring, full company? Also Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist? That sounds like real bullshit job.... Like how much talent do they need to acquire that they need full time person for that...
When you start bringing in specialist recruiters, you're basically saying you intend to hire even more aggressively than before, to the point that you need extra dedicated headhunters just to chase people down. Its one thing to sift through resumes that come to you, its another to reach this point. I actually can't think of a youtube media space that uses headhunters enough to justify a dedicated role, the conventional wisdom has always been that there's far more people interested in content creation than open work in content creation. So either they're doing something profoundly stupid, or they're admitting that they've run out of local talent that's volunteering itself - And this is Vancouver, they have infinity desperate media grads to work with.

I think Linus might be making a terminal mistake here. This screams that he's scaling to increase content output, again, beyond the daily videos, despite the fact that he's already verifiably proven to himself that he can't milk the LTT line any harder. So either he's completely braindead, or more likely he's trying to scale out new market segments with new channels again. It'd be incredibly funny to me the relative success of Alex's car channel has him spinning up an LTT answer to it, alongside who knows what else.

The video is not worth watching if you follow the thread. And even if you don't, you still shouldn't watch it. Waste of time. The guy didn't bother to research anything.

EDIT: Holy shit how do I embed videos on this site.

First, learn how to use thumbnails faggot, second, I find funny on how they wanna do an patreon/yt alternative with floatplane but they don't put enough resources on it to improve it
I'm a disgusting subhuman who uses this site on phone so the UI shits itself, I never hear anything about floatplane anymore, I remember I tried using it and it was filled with UI glitches and sucked overall, reminded me of one of those off spin kick clones

The only other creator I know of on Floatplane is DankPods, and he went over there because he was being screwed by Twitch over his drum streams. I wouldn't even use FP were it not for him withdrawing from Patreon a while back.

FP's UI isn't terrible, but it does feel a little undercooked. The only regular glitch I encounter is when I pause a video and try restarting it again. These days I tend to download videos for offline viewing, and it's nice that FP offers this functionality as standard.

As FP is Luke's baby, in an ideal world it would be spun off from LMG with Luke running the whole thing. He could potentially grow it into a niche platform like Nebula, only without the tedious video essays and Breadtuber AIDS. For example Zip Tie Tuning would be a good fit for a newly liberated FP. Granted, he'd probably need a dump truck full of Saudi money to keep it running like Nebula does, but how much editorial interference could the Saudis possibly force on tech and automotive videos?

Of course Linus would never let FP go, even if it freed up resources to try and unfuck the rest of the LMG empire, and gave him a cash injecton to boot.

I hear it got better after the first semester but now what it lacks is the 20% that requires 80% of the work but because that kind of work is rarely noticed by non-dev people but I won't be surprised if Linus and other shareholders don't wanna put that amount of work on it

My big complaint about floatplane is that I have no idea what's on it or why I would even want to join.

Like for example, here's Nebula:

It takes one click to just browse to see if there's anything I'd want to sign up for. I immediately know if this is something I'd be into.

In contrast, here's Floatplane:

OK I see Linus's head, so I can assume his stuff is on there. Is anything else? Where do I go to find that out? I heard Dankpods is on there but where is he? Do I need to make an account just to see that? I don't want to make one until I know what's on there and would making an account even tell me that?

But I'm no UX expert.

Edit: and hey this is a nice touch on Nebula:

The easiest way to redo the house tech upgrade stuff is just to reposition it as another lottery like the ROG rebuilds.
Have a list of upgrades that would make good content, have people on the team sign up for them, pull randomly for who gets it.
It would also make him look like less of an asshole since he would be helping team members instead of adding another 100 inch TV to his mansion.

The problem with that is 95% of LTT employees live in shoebox rental apartments because of the shit pay and Greater Vancouver housing market

The comments are really retarded.

No that logic applys to real jobs that have a specialised skill set like engineers, accountatns and various blue collar trades. It does not apply to media grads specially in this economy as they are people without marketable skills. The reason people leave a golden goose (for media people) like LTT is either cause the work enivroment sucks or cause the wages are comparble to living on benefits. Cause they are not gonna find work in their field. I found this reddit post from an ex employee and an excerpt from the LTT handbok
and another comment from a viewer

I can't believe that Canada dosen't actually have real labour protections. What a fucking joke.
Anyway the only reason a company would have a policy like this is cause they pay like and don't want employes to discuss competing offers from other companies. So more then likely that the pay is really bad at LTT

Probably had to change it now since it is illegal to bar employees from discussing salary

The pay is really awful at LMG. I posted about it a while ago
tl;dr for their IT positions it was 10k CAD below market when I looked and that was up against a government job. They do list pay ranges for these jobs but it's all production work so I really don't know how competitive it is. I do know that ~70k CAD per year in Vancouver will fund a lifestyle just above the poverty line and you'll struggle to save anything thanks to rent and cost of living. The non-senior roles they have listed seem to be floating around the 70k CAD mark.

As far as the getting fired part went, he said he was pulled into a meeting with LMG management + HR shortly after the launch of ZTT for violation of the non-compete. He states he was given the following three options:
  1. Take down Zip Tie Tuning
  2. Hand over the channel to LMG and become the channel manager
  3. Get fired
He and Andy both chose option three: "Get fired, get a generous severance package, own my own company, and do whatever I want to do with Andy [...] That was not a hard decision."
I'm late to the party, haven't been paying attention to this thread, on top of Josh's changes making my usual spots get lost. First, we've seen the LTT/LMG handbook that says you can't compete or have ownership/own stock in certain types of companies. This seems selectively enforced as you could argue that your employees doing Twitch or other types of streaming content could run afoul of this rule, on top of the owner doing whatever the fuck he wants with that Laptop company. Sure he states he has a stake in the company, but practice what you preach Linus; either you're out of line (and you are), or your employees should be allowed to make their own decisions (and they should).

Second, to decide getting fired with a severance so you can go do shit with a friend; it's not something you just decide to do because it sounds better or you have a gripe with your job. There are/were several issues they had to have them decide to be able to do their own thing. Alex has a girlfriend or something, but Andy has a family IIRC, he can't be that reckless with his professional situation. Imagine losing two of your legacy employees, because you were scared of their side project.

Linus fans screeching that it's totally normal for a substantial chunk of LTT's long-standing top talent to leave in the span of a few months is pretty funny. It's obvious there's something causing people to rush for the door.

Also, Linus' teeth were fine, I have no idea why he suddenly decided to commit audio terrorism on his audience via brace lisp.

You may be shocked to learn that despite the cost of living Vancouver generally has really low wages. The only ways to get ahead are to be an ultra rich chinese import or work as a software engineer at amazon/microsoft.

It's really normal for "IT" or engineering roles at small shops to be below a government job, as it's surprisingly hard to even get into a government role.

70k for a junior writer is probably generous. A senior role not rising much from that is pretty bad though, likely they'd rather encourage turnover and hire a young energetic fan.

Didn't he live with his parents (or his in-laws)? He has a child as well, but idk what job his wife does. Also, his choice to go into photography/videography means that he is okay with having uncertain employment.

I think they know how much it makes to have a youtube channel and realized that they can make a good living from it. The issue with the old talent is that they learned to do all sorts of odd jobs and can manage to have their own channel. That is different from someone who only does the writing, but has no idea how the commercial side or the filming operate.

I don't understand what the writers at LTT do. Do the presenters not write their videos anymore? Are they just given the script, like Linus does?

Dennis leaving is imo the more interesting one. He left for a relatively small fitness youtuber. I don't think he is paid better there than he could demand from Linus. So why? He was also friend with Yvonne iirc.

don't want employes to discuss
I remember when this was the discussion of the week for LTT. I don't remember if they changed that rule about discussing pay or not.
The thing about pay increasing a lot after a while may also be an old thing, probably back when Linus was able to talk with everyone (more or less)

I think the worst part about working for LTT is that you have a group of "celebrities" that are your co-workers and are the "inner circle" of the boss. I'm sure that many of the employees are also big LTT fans.
How does anyone raise their hand and point out that something is wrong or could be done better? I can imagine most people won't want to do it.

I wonder if Linus tried to keep ZTT under the LMG umbrella. He could have been an investor, but with no creative control. Or done one of those investments where you get your money back after X many years and/or you can buy back your company after certain amount of time.
Not sure if things are so tight that it was not even an option, or there were discussions but the offer was not good enough, or if there is anything personal where both Alex and Andy wanted to leave
