UPDATE: Gifts are now going out. You can see people opening their presents here:
December is baring down upon us and the nights have drawn in. But fear not, for the merry warmth and light of our very own festive tradition is here once again to give us a little joy and stir our creative spirits. Where we give and receive those
You do not have to be talented to participate, you just have to have the Kiwifarms spirit in your heart and know the true meaning of autism! So gather round Kiwi brethren and sistren and I shall impart the Secret Santa Sign-Up Guidelines. And if there's a Christmas miracle, this year you'll read them before posting.
Rules are largely the same as previous years with a special note about AI generated art (short version: don't):
The Rules
How it works: Sign up below and you will get a lovely gift from an anonymous user. But even better - you will be assigned a random recipient that you get to make your own gift for. Nobody knows who makes what and nobody tells. But all gifts try to work with their recipient's personal wish.
After the exchange, everybody posts their gifts in the showcase thread to show what they got.
1. The gift must be something you made yourself.
It must be something you created, and something transferable via PM
Examples of Acceptable Gifts:
- Art you made
- A photo you took
- A story you wrote
- A game you made
- Music you wrote yourself
- Any media you yourself have created.
Examples of Unacceptable Gifts:
- Electronic Gift Cards
- Purchased Digital Content
- Any media you did not make yourself.
- Anything purchased with cash.
- Auto-generated AI art. Seriously, don't - it's missing the point.
Look, we know it's a big thing, We know that a list of Likes and Dislikes is almost tailor made to be spat into a piece of software as positive and negative prompts. BUT, we're asking you not to do it. It's not in the spirit of making something yourself for your fellow man. We know that there can be a lot of talent and creativity involved in AI art. But we also know that if we open the lid on that just the tiniest crack we're going to get a LOT of AI art submissions that *don't* meet that criteria. Which then puts us in the position of either creating ill-feeling by not passing on someone's gift or else letting through something that was just the recipient's Likes and Dislikes shoved into ChatGPT. And worse, that choice will be last minute creating more pressure on the already generous SPIRIT BOTs who fill in for missing presents. So we hope AI enthusiasts understand but this year we will *not* be welcoming our robot overlords. We will be making crappy and not-crappy gifts as our ancestors did - with MS Paint, Photoshop and sharpies. Etc. This isn't some Reddit-tier philosophical thing about whether AI art is "real" art or not. Nor will lawyering your way through work on us because we're not lawyers. It's just pragmatic that for the most part, people get more joy from receiving something some idiot has scribbled out over three hours with crayons than they do some perfect AI creation. It's about the giving.
Now, this is still grudgingly listed as "Probably Unacceptable" because there are SOME people out there who MIGHT do something weird and super creative that involves AI and wants to use their own judgement on this. Maybe they made a song and want to just throw in some AI generated illustrations in the mp4. I don't know. But you're going to have to sell us on it hard because the default answer is "No". Photoshopping a bunch of AI generated characters together or pasting someone's face into AI art doesn't make it not an AI submission. We're going to be strict on this. You might even get a ban for trying to pass AI art off as something else.

In summary, your gift must be something from the heart and which you did not pay for. This also includes anything purchasable that you received for free, so if you have an extra game key, that is still unacceptable. This must be something you made yourself.
2. The gift must be appropriate
Photoshops of shock images, gore, etc. are not appropriate. Kiwifarms may be different to most of the Internet but remember that the gift is still meant to make your recipient feel good or laugh or be entertained. So keep your gift acceptable and well-intentioned. We will not deliver malicious gifts.
3. Please turn it in on time.
Sign-ups will last until the close of the 5th of December. You will receive your assignment shortly thereafter. You might even receive it before once there are enough people in the pool so signing up early is good. From there you have until 20th of December to turn in your gift which is the Saturday before Christmas. We'll try and accommodate gifts up to the Sunday but understand you're making other people's lives harder - please aim for the Thursday. If you cannot create your gift in time, you have until December 12th to drop out without punishment. That is intended to give us some time to make arrangements so that someone isn't left without a gift. If you fail to turn in a gift and do not give an explanation, you may not be allowed to participate in future Secret Santa events.
4. Sign up requirements.
In order to participate you must:
- Be in good standing (general catch-all to exclude someone who we know will be a tit)
- Have not been banned from Previous Secret Santas (we have a short list from last year, don't make it longer).
- Have DMs open. There's always at least one muppet who thinks we can communicate with him psychically. You can close DMs again afterwards you antisocial gits!
- Account name (yes - we know it's in the post, it helps with the copy-pasting mass replies)
- Your Likes
- Your Dislikes
- A Fun Fact About You
- Able to be a SPIRIT BOT? [Yes / No]
@Overly Serious
Likes: 17th Century Literature, Abstract Patterns, The works of Robert W. Chambers, Insects

Able to be Spirit Bot: No
Other things I want to say or ask...

Do not DM your info to a helper. Post it in this thread. But you can DM us questions if you like.
What is a SPIRIT BOT? The X-mas spirit bots are noble heroes who step in at the last minute to make sure someone gets a present when their assigned giver flakes out. They don't have to do this but they do because they're better than ordinary people. Understand that if you volunteer this means you'll probably get a frantic PM in the last week before Christmas asking you to produce something. But without you, someone could get nothing. If you'd be able to do a quick gift on short notice, we thank you.
We are not currently looking for more Helpers but if you do want to help with organising this just DM me and we'll add you as back up. If called up, you'll be assigned a list of participants and expected to send and receive messages with questions and gifts for sending out. A Helper is different to a Spirit Bot.
5. This is a SECRET Santa.
Don't reveal who your recipient is when you get them. If for some reason you need to get clarification on something from them reach out to a helper, NOT your recipient.
The list of helpers and participants is in the post below this one. If you don't appear on the list immediately, don't worry. We're working our way down the list.
Alright - the door is open, the yule log is lit and the air smells of mulled wine... Come on in!
EDIT:
- We are adding you to the list in real time. So if you come back later and edit your Likes/Dislikes we may not see it unless you DM us about it.
- We also ask that you not change your username during the competition. If you do, you must at least tell us about it so you're not lost.
- A thank-you to all those who can read and are using the actual a sign-up template provided. A sad 'tssk' at the dunderheads who insist on messing with it because they're 'special'.
