You can want something that is bad for you. I can understand not wanting to be around other people. I think that it's a contributing factor but ultimately I think that his depression is situational rather than chemically unbalanced clinical depression.
This is really where Phil's "depression" comes from imo. He's aware of the situation he's in but has no ability to change it because he's a useless sad sack of shit that's been carried through life. Forty-three, looks like he's eighty, no friends, no family he sees, stuck in that house day after day drinking and blowing money on Amazon and mobile games. He's ugly, miserable, friendless, loveless, he has absolutely nothing going for him and no way out. If he wasn't The Guy he could improve and turn it around, but then we wouldn't be here now would we?
