Fuck, and I was just about to release my game 'Too Many F*cking Troons". An FPS game where you play as a young girl blasting troons out of the women's bathroom who are trying to assault you.

Long rant post, but I've had these feelings brewing for a long time

Signalis is my litmus test for whether or not a Youtuber is worth listening to. Anyone with an interest in philosophy outside of its relevance to video games will certainly find Signalis to be extremely bloated. It haphazardly includes philosophical references to vastly different schools of thought with no regard to why those schools of thought are different, instead treating them as "cool references" used to bolster the "intellectualness" of the game. Because being a fan of Signalis is more about telling all your friends how smart you are. "Look how many of these references I get!"

If you know none of these references going in, when you learn about them after you play the game you go "oh cool that game made me learn so much stuff!" But if you're already familiar with everything it references, you're left scratching your head in utter confusion at how stupid it is.

There are videos on Youtube about the game that are longer than the game itself. You have to be most fart-huffing pseudo-intellectual to think that that makes sense. If a video game takes 8 hours to beat, and 12 hours to explain all the references it shoved in its gaping asshole, maybe those references didn't add anything to the actual experience of playing the game.

If a piece of art isn't confident that it can express in its own words what is meaningful to the creators, if it can't make its own attempt to convey something to me, and instead it needs to point to something else and say "see like that! I mean that thing over there", then you have failed at making art. I'm not playing your game to connect with the guy you want to reference, I'm playing your game to connect with your experience. Signalis is a game made by cowards too afraid to convey their own experience without using a crutch, and I hate it.

This reminds me of an opinion on gaming in general: Wolfenstein is an overdone shtick with no real identity (first person shooter doesn't count) besides Nazi BS. And I feel like this isn't far off from someone saying you play as bj blazkowitz cousin or something.

Seriously if you told me it was a Wolfenstein remake demake, i would 100% believe you. Because if you have shooting, nazis, and an ounce of edginess it could pass for a Wolfenstein game.

If you don't believe me, ask what a game would look like if you said "a new Wolfenstein game, but without Nazis".

I can imagine tons of similar shit. Doom without demons? Duke nukem, serious sam.

Xcom without aliens? Jagged alliance, mario rabbids (weird game but its an example)

Hell even generic overdone shit like cod has a clear gameplay loop and battlefield is a distinct close comparison in many ways.

But Wolfenstein without nazis is basically without any identity beyond a shooter
 
I can't wait to see this thing get a million 10/10 and tons of publicity and sell like 2k copies and have a all time player high count of 500 on steam.

I mean, it will a bigger success than Concord at least.
