What are some of the mist CONSISTENT bands? As a DM fan
• Dying Fetus, doesn't sound exactly the same every album, but every single record is guaranteed to smash your fucking skull with how brutal it is.
• Gorgasm, impressive riffs with crazy speed every single damn time. Some records better than others, but they don't really diverge from the formula at any point
• All Shall Perish, aside from the debut (which I think is fairly mid), you pretty much just get good very quality deathcore every album with riffs for days.
• Dark Funeral, haven't listened to their whole discography but I'm sure it's safe to say it's all just the same brutal black metal. If you've heard one Dark Funeral song, then you get the idea. I've heard somebody say once "Dark Funeral is black metal for people who like death metal". And that's about as accurate as it gets

What are some of the mist CONSISTENT bands? As a DM fan:

Nile - still really damn good despite releasing so many albums. I can't name any weak songs and they never fail live (seen them three or four times). My only complaint is the constantly changing lineup. Oh, well, at least we got Dallas's Narcotic Wasteland as a result.

Cryptopsy - other than the infamous The Unspoken King everything is very solid. Mounier is to this day in the top 10 of DM drummers.

Archspire - I was wary of their last album, but I can't complain too much. They should drop a few signature things they always do, though. Still, I can't name any real duds on any of the 5 albums they've released so far.

Spawn of Possession/Retromorphosis - if you know, you know. Retro may not be AS good as SoP, but it's hard to fail with a lineup like that. I can't stop rewatching Erlend Caspersen's playthrough videos on Youtube.

That's off the top of the head, I can't think of any lesser known bands at the moment because my brain is full of holes. Maybe I'll add some names later.

Possessed - Beyond the Gates is underrated, and the 2019 comeback album is great too.

Luciferion - Only has two albums but they're both great even if the second one has a messy production (just like morbid angel with heretic lmao)

Defeated Sanity - Doesn't have a bad album afaik (haven't listened to them all)

Mithras - Super good domination/formulas era morbid angel worship

Adramelech - Super fucking underrated

In other news: most metal is so shit these days that I've generally abandoned Death Metal and moved on to Doom, ...which turns out to be really good. I listened to Conan and my first thought was "whoa, this is heavier than Mortician".
I've listened to Sunn and Cathedral in the past, but never really got into it.
I've rotated back to clean vocals so now I'm on: Pentagram, St. Vitus, Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass, Warning, etc

I almost kind of feel like you shouldn't even be listening to metal if you care about vocals this much.

Unless you're listening to like fake "metal" like nu metal (which i admittedly am fond of for nostalgic purposes) or scene kiddy mallcore bullshit like Ice Nine Kills or Sleep Token (that oddly gets associated with metal, for some reason fairly often), vocals really is the least important factor.

I listened to Woods of Ypress entire discography this week and didn't even notice he alternates between screaming and signing. Metal is one of the rare genres where the vocals are usually redundant.
Good vocals is nice to have, but I never catch myself thinking "I feel like listening to a whole band just for a guy singing instead of growling today"

Wombbath is pretty consistent. 90s band that reformed in the 2010s and put out 6 solid Swedish style albums since then, and they nicely avoid them all sounding too similar.

Vocals to me are important if they feel like another instrument/layer to the song

If it's just there to be there then it doesn't matter and can be rightfully criticized or ignored

Here's one for the Slipknot fans.

Have you ever wondered what Slipknot would have sounded like if they stuck to MFKR and Iowa styles and added death metal elements on top of that? Well, there exists a very strange clone band called Apathy Syndrome from the actual same city as Slipknot (Des Moines), they even wear the same style outfits.

Metal Archives lists their genre as simply "groove metal" but I think death/groove metal/nu metal is a more accurate description for their sound.

Also the vocals sort of make me think of Mushroomhead more than Slipknot if that matters. Aside from that, other notable differences from Slipknot is less focus on excessive percussion elements, as well as the lack of a turntable or sampling member, but they have a keyboardist at the very least. Which adds layer to the sound and contributes to the Slipknot-esque identity

If you ever loved Slipknot and crave their heavy shit, their album is a fantastic listen. Especially since nobody really seems to know about these guys

I listened to Conan and my first thought was "whoa, this is heavier than Mortician".
With the recent surge of Doom and Sludge, I can only hope that any new-gen music follows these type of trends and have a new standard. Either way, its nice knowing that bands like Conan are getting slightly more popular. I saw them with Weedeater recently, both are fucking Kino.

Could you kind people please recommend some (non-satanic) death metal bands? I've only listened to Death and Bolt Thrower so far.
In recent times I've been mostly listening to atmospheric and symphonic BM, e.g. Elderwind - The Magic of Nature (Волшебство Живой Природы), Caladan Blood - Echoes of Battle, Drudkh - Autumn Aurora, etc. by virtue of the YouTube channel "Black Metal Promotion", so a channel of similar nature but for DM would also be appreciated.
Also, speaking of BM:

I like how I can listen to this without cringing but power metal is "too gay"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=9EajfVbATfkDoesn't need the outro and he overdoes the demonic shrieking on part of the verses but the chorus is baller
Ha, I loved Babylon Zoo as a kid. I might be the only person who actually bought King Kong Groover (it was shite, sadly), but if it turns out Glamhammer was a fan too, everything is right with the world.

Hell's Headbangers have reissued Prostitute Disfigurement's first album, so I'm currently stumbling down death metal memory lane:

Those clicky kicks, lovely. You know on the Alesis DM10 module, the ultraclicky kick preset is titled 'Blastbeat'? It has absolutely no utility in any context other than metal.

Those are all "regular" DM, sometimes brutal.

Within the death metal genre it's relatively common for larger bands to achieve flagship status by finding a stylistic niche well into their career and hemming closely to that formula for the remainder of their lifespan.

Some bands that fit this description off the top of my head are Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, Bolt Thrower, and Nile

Ik, ik, double posting, but here's a Christian death metal band I've been listening to recently:

Because extreme music is so unconcerned with lyricism, or vocals in general, listeners aren't as reflexively dismissive of religious messaging as their counterparts in rock, rap, or heavy metal; if your instrumentals are good, you can sell out shows singing paens to Jesus. Extol are a relatively well-respected Christian outfit from Finland; big names in the scene have gone on record stating that they're an innovative source of inspiration. Very nice melodies here

They're not reticent about incorporating some absolutely diabolical riffage into their work either. Some of the segments here wouldn't seem out of place on Morbid Angel's covenant.
