a Simmons ProTarget? looks like the 40mm objective model (looking in my catalog, i came up with part number SIM41640 if anyone is curious). those look like the OEM BSA/Weaver-style rings that come with it, which typically use the rather anemic 6-48 or 8-40 screws... which aren't really appropriate for a .300 Win Mag or whatever, and if mounted improperly (torque, position on the rail, et c) you can generate enough recoil to bust a screw or damage the optic by introducing unwanted sudden acceleration for the erector (which in the less expensive scopes tends to be semi-rigidly mounted and just uses deflection from the turrets to adjust the position to save on construction costs).

correct torque should be around 20 in-lbs IIRC, and depends if they are aluminum or steel rings, et c. hope he used an alignment tool to set the rings as well, since it can introduce a bend if they are slightly out of alignment with each other and recoil will use that slight misalignment to impinge on the tube, housing, bell, or saddle, et c. then again it's a $100.

typically, the optic is an appreciable percentage (if not more expensive) of the cost of the rifle it's mounted to. i mean, a $100 is better than nothing, but i would have strongly recommended something like a Burris XTR or one of the less expensive Nikon FX1000, Zeiss Conquest, or Vortex Strike Eagle scopes floating around if the XTR is too much.

heck, a Vortex Crossfire II is $180 and much better suited to the caliber and $220+ will usually come with high quality steel rings as part of a deal or something.
