Did this dude try to take credit for buying the house that Deb paid for and had to struggle through debt to keep up with the bills? Also what part of the marriage was a " happy family " because from the sounds of things, both parties were miserable the entire duration of it with Gabe contributing a large part of the negative aspects of the relationship. Way late but I wanted to address this further.
One of the creeps I encountered in my early teens would talk about that kind of shit with me after I admitted that I watched A&E and other true crime shows. He initially presented his stance as, "Wow isn't that crazy that happened? Totally not something I would try to do! Really wacky though that that kid got raped and murdered though huh! Glad they caught the guy!" but over time as he got more and more comfortable talking to me he would start to play Devil's Advocate, saying shit like "He did that awful thing and it was really terrible, but he was also mentally ill so maybe we should consider that? What if he was abused by his parents?" until by the time I walked away from the relationship he'd gotten so cozy as to admit that he had been a pedophile "In the past," and he had this interest because he hated how kid killers made all pedos look like monsters or something (yark) and when I challenged him on that he ended up admitting that he watched True Crime shit because, in his words, "They're dead anyway so it's not like I can hurt them now even if I wanted to." Real fucking winner that dude was.
Having an interest in criminal psychology does not automatically disqualify someone from jerking off to dead bodies or rape victims in their off-time; in fact I would argue that there is probably some percentage of people who try to get into criminal psych for that exact fucking reason. Just as there are abuse councilors who get into their job in order to find vulnerable people to influence, for better or worse; or people who become surgeons because they have a fetish for gore, but do inevitably save lives; you cannot truly know another person's motivations down to their core until they expose themselves and while some people like this may not let their interests or fetishes affect their work, there are enough people who get into this type of job for more malicious reasons that some slip through the cracks, and it's very likely that not everyone's motivations regarding their chose lifestyle is going to be 100% pure.
