War 2 Russians who reached Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island were trying to avoid military service

Two Russians who said they fled their country to avoid compulsory military service have requested asylum in the U.S. after beaching their boat on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, Alaska U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s office said Thursday.

Karina Borger, a Murkowski spokesperson, by email said the office has been in communication with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection and that “the Russian nationals reported that they fled one of the coastal communities on the east coast of Russia to avoid compulsory military service.”

Spokespersons with the Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection referred a reporter’s questions to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security public affairs office, which provided little information Thursday. The office, in a statement, said the individuals “were transported to Anchorage for inspection, which includes a screening and vetting process, and then subsequently processed in accordance with applicable U.S. immigration laws under the Immigration and Nationality Act.”

The agency said the two arrived Tuesday on a small boat. It did not provide details on where they came from, their journey or the asylum request.

Alaska’s senators, Republicans Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, on Thursday said the two landed at a beach near the village of Gambell, an isolated community of about 600 people on St. Lawrence Island. Sullivan said he was alerted to the matter by a “senior community leader from the Bering Strait region” on Tuesday morning.

Gambell is about 200 miles southwest of the Western Alaska hub city of Nome and about 50 miles from the tip of the Chukotka Peninsula in Siberia.

A person who responded to an email address listed for Gambell directed questions to federal authorities.

Sullivan, in a statement, said he has encouraged federal authorities to have a plan in place in case “more Russians flee to Bering Strait communities in Alaska.”

“This incident makes two things clear: First, the Russian people don’t want to fight Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” Sullivan said. “Second, given Alaska’s proximity to Russia, our state has a vital role to play in securing America’s national security.”

Murkowski said the situation underscored “the need for a stronger security posture in America’s Arctic.”

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy on Wednesday, as initial details of the situation were emerging, said he did not expect a continual stream or “flotilla” of individuals traversing the same route. He also warned that travel in the region could be dangerous as a fall storm packing strong winds was expected.

It is unusual for someone to take this route to try to get into the U.S.

U.S. authorities in August stopped Russians without legal status 42 times who tried to enter the U.S. from Canada. That was up from 15 times in July and nine times in August 2021.

Russians also try to enter the U.S. through Mexico, which does not require visas. Earlier this year, U.S. authorities contended with a spate of Russians who hoped to claim asylum if they reached an inspection booth at an official crossing.

Some trace the spike to before Russia invaded Ukraine, attributing it to the imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny last year.

I think that while it will be unlikely that the route the two took will become popular for other defectors, you can bet that the US will increase surveillance of that area just to monitor for more boats if they haven't already.

I'm aware that there's usually a US nuclear submarine patrolling in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and a few other stops for most of the year, so I wouldn't be surprised if their route changes to be more northward just to make sure Russia's naval forces aren't getting too close to North America.

I will accept them if they bring several of their women with them, singles (of course) and the ones with the long legs especially.

The only solution I see is to let them stay to spite Russia.

Plus if they were at any risk of being drafted that means they're healthy and prime working age, so they're good immigrants to have.

But we can let in hundreds of thousands useless south Americans.

I live in Alaska. I come from a Russian family and speak the language fluently. That's about as far as I'll powerlevel.

While there were only 800 Russians total living in Colonial Russian Alaska at it's peak- there is a very large ethnic Russian and Ukrainian population here. The Russian Mafia are extremely active in Alaska- especially along the coastal areas due to the "big money" for the Bratva being in poaching sea otters (which normally only Native Alaskan can legally hunt. Sea Otters are BIG money because it's the thickest fur known to man). Aside form that, a large number of "Old Believers" (more or less Russian Mennonites) fled from persecution during the Soviet Union and were given refugee status in Alaska to the point they set up numerous towns with Russian names. Alot of Native Alaskans are still members of the Orthodox Church (usually under Orthodox Church of American jurisdiction though) and there are a few Russian dialects only spoken by a handful of people in Alaska (it uses the pre-revolutionary script and sounds alot like 17th century jargon).

Alot of Native Alaskans absolutely fucking hate Russians more than any other kind of white person and it's very dangerous to openly speak Russian in the villages- I would argue. The Alaskan Public Education syetem is awash with alot of frankly bullshit stories about ebul Tsarist Russia oppressing Native Alaskans by ending the pre-Christian practices of polygamy, cannibalism, and human sacrifice (The Tlingits in particular I would compare to a mix of the Aztecs and Commanche)- OH! The Horror! In multiple Native Alaskan languages the equivalent of the N word for White People is "Gussaq"- which comes from Cossack, obviously.

That's some context about the Russian demographics of Alaska in particular. It is extremely impressive that they managed to make to to their destination at all- but they picked a very good time of year. If they postponed their trip into winter the chances of death would increase exponentially and recently Nome and alot of other Bering straight areas got wrecked by the Arctic equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane. The Russian Far East (Kamchatka, etc.) is EXTREMELY heavily guarded and militarized so I'm honestly more impressed they were able to leave the Far East undetected. There is no ferry service between the Russian Far East and Alaska- and foreigners of any kind are outright prohibited from large portions of the Russian Far East because it's considered military territory even civilians usually aren't allowed in.

There is a widely popular conspiracy theory of sorts among Russian Ultranationalist circles that Alaska was not, in fact, sold by the Tsar to the United States- rather, it was leased for a period of 99 years (Like Hong Kong and Macau) and while the lease expired in the 60's it was ineligable to be returned because Russia didn't exist- only the (((Soviet Union))). Now that Russia is back however- the lease has ended and "eviction", the Ultranationalists argue, should be on the table.

I've said as a joke to people that if the Democrat Party is blatantly encouraging mass illegal immigration from Mexico and El Salvador as a means to get votes and turn red states blue- why not encourage mass illegal migration of Russians into Alaska if Russia supposedly covertly supports the GOP? Alaska, believe it or not, is about 50/50 Democrat and Republican. Get a bunch of illegal Russian immigrants to stuff the ballot and turn Alaska into a big red wave- except also consider now you have a very large ethnic Russian minority that the US Federal Government would probably be inclined to fuck with. What were the last places that had a large Russian minority that was fucked with by the government? Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk.... *OH*

Overall though I'm extremely happy they made it safely, I hope they get asylum in the US, and I wish them extremely happy and prosperous lives as US citizens. I will note though it is extremely embarrassing both US Customs and Border Patrol as well as the fucking Coast Guard had nobody who could help resolve the situation for 800 miles- you would think especially right now the very small aquatic gap separating the US from Russia would be guarded better.

Call me a coward traitor or whathever but if I was Russian I would also be fleeing as far as possible from that war, I'm just not enough of a cuck to fight for ANY politician or their disgusting geopolitical ineterests so I can't blame anyone for running away.

There have always been Russians along the West Coast of North America, down to California. aka Russian America, predating US Statehood. I knew about the Old Believers in Alaska but I was unaware of the Alaskan native animosity.

wait it's just literally two?
early headlines made it sound like it some Mariel Boatlift shit
