Mikayla Raines, founder of the popular animal rescue organization Save A Fox and a well-known YouTuber, has died by suicide, her husband Ethan Raines confirmed in a heartbreaking video uploaded to the Save A Fox YouTube channel on June 23, 2025.

Mikayla, who was known for her tireless work rescuing and caring for foxes and other exotic animals, had been battling severe mental health conditions including depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. According to Ethan, despite years of therapy and various medications, she continued to struggle with daily life and emotional regulation.
In his emotional 11-minute statement, Ethan revealed that Mikayla had been the target of a prolonged online harassment campaign. The abuse reportedly came not only from strangers but also from individuals within her personal life and others in the animal rescue community.

“They spread false rumors, and being the sensitive person she was, it deeply affected her,” Ethan said. “She tried for years to push through the pain, but this time it was too much.”

Mikayla is survived by Ethan, their daughter Freya, and the many animals she cared for at Save A Fox’s Minnesota and Florida locations. Ethan has vowed to continue her legacy and the mission of the rescue.

Fans and fellow animal lovers expressed shock and sorrow online, paying tribute to Mikayla’s impact on the rescue community.

Actually of all the serious personality disorders BPD has the best recovery rate thanks to things like DBT therapy. In fact clinical studies have found that most Borderline women lose the disorder completely after menopause.
Unfortunately though BPD can be co-morbid with other disorders that don't just go away over time such as NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) which has pretty much a zero percent recovery rate in a lifetime. I don't know this woman, and it's very sad she took the coward's way out, but I would guess she had a lot more inner demons than just BPD tormenting her. In my studies I've found that many seemingly well meaning, altruistic types are in fact very narcissistic because it gives them recognition supply. Also animals like dogs give unconditional loyalty to the narcissist. I should write a paper on my experiences with "dog rescue" women. Perhaps not in this woman's case, but it does give food for thought that things are not always as they seem.

Foxes can eat dog food, without problems. they're know for being omnivores. And they were fed other diets as well. You could see it in the videos.
And the conditions looks good, They had their own cages that they were kept in while they circulated who was in the big yards as not every foxed like each other.

You're right that the dogfood isn't a huge deal, but it's more of a supplemental thing, since dogfood isn't designed for foxes, it's designed for dogs. A fox needs to consume raw meat, which is why Mikayla would occasionally give them eggs. They also benefit from having a little bit of fresh fruit in their diet, hence Mikayla offering them watermelon, for instance. Commercial dog food typically has grain, which foxes don't really need and can contribute to obesity in excess. Basically, dogfood is more of a side dish than a staple. The core of a fox's diet should be raw meat of some kind, either poultry, small game, or fish depending on the species. Also, this isn't necessarily a dietary thing, but Mikayla has mentioned using pumpkin seeds as de-wormer (which doesn't actually work), and not pyrantel pamoate like a normal rescue. That's probably how Ethan ended up with tapeworms, and they're extremely lucky poor Freya never did.

The enclosures at SAF were certainly better than the ones at fur farms, but they were not up to snuff with other rehabs. I never mentioned the injuries foxes obtained through fighting (which was also an issue) because I felt that was not as fair a criticism as the injuries sustained from the actual fences themselves. There should be two layers of fencing separated by several feet between each pen, and the fences need a concrete base that extends into the ground. The extra layers are to discourage injuries from fighting through fences, and the base prevents injury incurred by digging. Additionally, trees shouldn't be too tall, and they cannot be placed too close to fences; one fox died falling from a tall tree, and at least two escaped the facility by jumping from trees. Further, some of the foxes were kept in small, all-concrete enclosures; there's no justification for that.

Look, if these were just a bunch of well-meaning hippies who bit off more than they could chew and made some beginner's mistakes, they probably wouldn't have deserved any scorn. The core of the problem is that Mikayla continued to make these mistakes even when the charity was raking in more than enough money to solve them. If you have a yearly net income of over a million dollars for several years, there's no excuse not to renovate the fences, remove the problematic trees, and give the foxes actual deworming medicine. Plus sneakily replacing lost foxes with lookalikes because you don't want to lose donors is just scummy.

Ethan said this, and I'll say it again: the criticism that hurt Mikayla most were the things she was hearing from friends, former volunteers, and other rehabs/rescues/sanctuaries. Reddit snark subs are deeply retarded places full of a-logging and poop-touching, but it bears repeating that hers had only had like 90 members at the time of her death. That's a drop in the bucket when you consider that SAF had over two million subscribers on Youtube.
