It got worse as Adventure Time started having more of a story and Steven Universe started. /co/ attracted a lot of refugees when tumblr closed. I'm not an oldfag by 4chan standards, I regularly browsed in 2009 and I mostly used /co/ to torrent shit. For a while the Pony and Homestuck shit was the worst part of the board after that. Linkara got made fun of still, but eventually someone decided that making fun of e-celebs isn't allowed.

General threads shouldn't exist, they are antithetical to what an imageboard is supposed to be.

I think it's natural enough that they happen for some topics, but I think they should also be curtailed harshly when there's nothing to talk about anymore. Look at the Katawa Shoujo General on /vg/, that is a general about a SINGLE visual novel with no sequels or additional content to it, there's nothing they have to talk about which is about Katawa Shoujo so it just devolved into a circlejerk.
They don't talk about the subject matter, they don't even really create stuff around the subject matter, it's just there because of force of habit, and that's the kind of general which should be snuffed out.

I'm surprised that they keep /vt/ up as it is, that place is a fucking madhouse, bearing some of the most deranged posters on the site, the rules against doxing get violated very often. The internet overall from 2008 to 2012 was extremely libertarian. Even really cuckolded sites like reddit had a gigantic libertarian presence because most tech-literate people were at that time. Only when normies started to get involved in mass social media around 2012 did things change towards authoritarian leftism on places like reddit.

4chan held on longer since it's naturally repulsive to normies, and like you said by 2015 I think most people were done with their honeymoon phase on libertarianism.
