I can't say I have ever been a part of 4chan's glory days. I visited a bit back in 2014, but I mostly hung out out on the more normie parts of the net back in the day. By the time I decided to take a look at what the fuss was about, 4chan was more or less in its twilight years back during 2015. Definitely more active back then, more... Genuine? Authentic? Something along those lines to the point where even a newfag like me can tell that something is different. Regardless, I found my little nichespots to enjoy my time in. It was not anything grand, but I remember back on places like /mlp/ some writefags doing their damnedest to provide their best greentexts. One particular instance I remember was some poor bastard afflicted with a fatal but otherwise treatable condition languishing away due to his shit family, so all he had left as solace was /mlp/ of all places. From what I remember, he was never on good terms with them to begin with, but was fairly competent in being a medical student, and only had trouble securing the funds to complete his courses due to his family being shit.

Now granted, you always have to take these stories with a grain of salt. But it doesn't seem like you would tell a fake story in a greentext thread of that nature. God knows there are stories where there are creatives or otherwise that were in even worse straits than he was in with court testimony to back in up, so I doubt what he said was far from the truth. For all of its fault back in the day, some boards seemd to draw a genuine sincerety from their participants. Most of it was just shitposting back when I got in around 2015 onward, but you were able to find a nugget in the rough every now and then.

I don't have the screencap on me at the moment, but I remember there being not one, not two, but three separate instances on /k/ where some dumb bastards gassed themselves with mustard gas. I definitely saw the first one that happened, with anon in question gassing his entire apartment block when he decided to do a little chemical experiment in his bathroom. Another one after about year and a half later was another anon who either didn't see that thread or didn't care also gassed himself in his own home while trying to test some Russian gasmask. If those threads taught me anything, it was that 4chan attracted some... Unusual characters to say the least. But hell, they were fun to behold as a lurker to see the reactions to plain dumb stupidity, and sometimes the very rare golden posts that deserved to be saved specifically to your hard drive.

To me, 4chan is a unique, if not nessecarily great part of Internet history. While inglorious most of the time, it had a genuineness to it like others in this thread have said. Kiwi Farms has that to some extent and mirrors some desire to see the very same, but you could go and post most whatever to 4chan, and have it be forgotten for good or ill. If you made a great post, it meant you made it great without need of your name being attached to it. If you screwed up, most of the time you just had to lay low and not be a repeat dumbass. That anonimity was both 4chan's greatest strength and flaw. The former I have already illustrated, and the latter for anyone who has dared to check wtihin the past couple of years to see how that very thing was turned on the site. Countless shitposters, derailments left right and center, and that isn't even getting into the glowops of it all.

As for whether it shall arise again, there probably will be some form of it down the line to fill some niche. But due to the environment we are now in, there won't be another 4chan. Too easy to fuck with any new imageboards with CP and the like to even try, and even a more curated site like Kiwi Farms can only just stand the tide of those that wish to see it die. (Along with whoever is using it.) Not to mention with most new and upcoming users for the net being lobotomized with whatever the hell is modern net culture anyway to even bother searching out for it. But if nothing else, 4chan played its part for good and ill.
