I had this genius plan after spending 3 months reading the fucking thing to signal that I was a "fan". I printed out this picture of Kankri and taped it to one of my folders. The girl noticed it one day and asked if I liked homestuck. My spaghetti launched itself mach speed out of my pockets and I immediately replied with "no". She just stared at me for a bit and said "ok". We never talked after that. Fuck my gay retarded life.

Any platform that sorts by a voting or consumption metric isn't for discussion.

There's an old principle concerning internet content called "1:9:90". 1% of the community creates content. 9% contribute to content. 90% consume it.

"bump order" communities, like BBS style and PhpBB style forums like this, or imageboards and similar things, are what I call "1 and 9 centric". The "1" (OP) creates the content. The "9" (we, the commenters) contribute to it, and the content is sorted by what is most interesting to the "1" and the "9".

In such a configuration, the top 10% of the community is given the spotlight.

A voting system sorts content by the whim of the 90. You don't have to actually say anything to influence where the discussion is sorted to. In this system, the bottom 90% of the community more or less controls what the top 10% talk about. This is why "sage is not a downvote" IMO, is true. Even if all you say is "you're gay and your opinion sucks", in order to sage, you had to ante up and join the 9%, and minimally as it was, you still contributed to the conversation. Only faggots who just go "sage" fail at this. For the former, it took more thought than just pressing the "downvote" button, though; he minimally had to express why he thought OP was a faggot or whatever.

90-centric systems are systems where the mean direct content creators to effectively dance for them like monkies. When you're posting on reddit, you're there to entertain retards by again and again discussing content that's on their level. The level of the 90.

90-centric systems are beneficial to the stakeholder, though, because 90-centric engagement maximizes CPM and thus ad revenue for the platform. A 90-centric system is addictive, massive, and profitable.

Now then, don't take this as me saying all "1-and-9" systems are good. There's issues that need to be addressed there to ensure that you get the right kinds of people, but between a 1-and-9 centric system and a 90-centric system, the 1-and-9 will always be more pleasant for the people actually doing the talking.
