I think it was part of their profile building. image metadata and userid matching to build profiles on anons which include whatever comments they're making that get matched.
Something like that could be done by (((3rd parties))) as OSINT which gives that kind of operation plausible deniability even if our own institutions/the site itself are complicit/cooperative. Giving foreign agencies data directly from the site administration (especially if requested by the government) would be a huge breach of public trust and conflict of interest for everyone involved.

meaningless.
Quite like your convictions for acting as the janitor's bulwark.

the admins probably want to go for legal action against sharty for a cyberattack
If this wasn't an op, they will lose that case too. Do you know what Sharty's defense will be?
"You didn't update your code in 15 years, and ran your site using dead software. You obviously didn't care about being hacked. You failed to perform the most basic level of due diligence."
I'm telling you, 4chan went down because the glowies wanted it to go down. You have to make an actual effort to be as stupid as they were, if that's really how they were running the site.

If it wasn't the government, then it was a clique of admins on that I have no doubt.
It's just admins and moderators being dysfunctional faggots. This has been a problem since internet forums began with the BBs in the 1980s. Original fags like myself left SA because the mods were trooning out even as far back as 2003 and Lowtax was a useless sack of shit just like Hiro is today. If there is a position of power that lets people lord over others its always going to be inhabited by the most disgusting wretches possible because normal and good people wont lower themselves to pick such filth up off the ground.

It will be more telling if that second excuse flies in court.
You don't really get absolved of theft even if the person you stole from didn't lock their doors.

Why would the glowies operate out of sharty? I've came up with a few explanations but let me hear yours. Also that reasoning is retarded on shartys end, "your door was unlocked why wouldn't I walk into your house and shoot your dog?". The cyberattack was intentional and while negligent on 4chans end, cannot be justified in a court of law.

that isn’t how the letter of the law works
there isn’t nuance, cybercrime is cybercrime. It’s cybercrime to guess someone’s shitty password, even, and if they really wanted they could go after you for something like that.

apartment you used to live in
According to who?
I mean if they want to assume every pic posted here or on 4chan is me that's cute but I'm not sure how they plan to go about connecting me.
I think some anons are just butthurt from my first couple days here and desperately reaching for anything they can tie me to in a last ditch effort to try making me give a fuck
I'm waiting on the wardialers to hit me up with a call or text

They didn't steal anything though.

Plausible deniability.
for your first one:
they caused real financial damage to the site
for your second one:
I thought of that too, but the problem is that 4chan is a great place to operate when you're collecting data on weirdos online, as I mentioned before, the pol humor threads were a means of data collection within the website. why scatter the userbase among all the altchans and kiwifarms?
