It's not the pope – or any priest for that matter – who forgives sins, it's Christ. When a priest is involved in a sacrament, he's in persona Christi.

Except that, to Catholics, the Pope is the Vicar of Christ and is supposed to be a living example of what Christ wants us to be.

Christ washed the feet of sinners and Samaritans. He washed the feet of the ugly, sick, and lame. What is the Pope supposed to do? Say TND 1488? I’m as racist as the next guy but as a Catholic I understand that racism has no place when it comes to matters of faith.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make. Jesus didn't painstakingly march his congregation to Botswana and start washing nigger feet. The fact that Samaritans were regarded as "unclean foreigners" when they existed in Assyrian land (look up where this is, then compare the distance to Galilee or Idumea) is demonstration enough that Jesus' message wasn't to blindly tolerate every human-shaped creature you meet. Most people aren't ready for the discussion that makes them realize if the Bible ever mentioned niggers, they'd be regarded as demonic creatures who ought to be avoided.

So many of the modern Church are boomers; they're not immortal. Like you said, the new generation are all younger, and they took their vows while the Church is in crisis. A priest – especially a Catholic priest – is in a position of ridicule in society, it confers no worldly nor egotistical advantages. All the priests of the last twenty years are in it for Christ's sake, they're true faithful, but it's going to be a 'long march through the institution', to use the language of modernists.

Have you not read the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman? Jesus traveled to Samaria early in His ministry and met a Samaritan woman who was an adulterer. He spoke with her and forgave her for her sins. She fell to her feet and recognized Him as Lord. He embraced her and told her to sin no more.

This story was more powerful BECAUSE Samaritans were viewed as the niggers of the day. Christ did not care for such frivolities and saw the good in all people.
