I will never understand this mindset of treating TTRPGs like video games.
I won't judge people for not being strong roleplayers or being shy, that's totally okay. Different strokes for different folks. But like holy shit you have a medium who's limits really can stretch so much farther than almost any other, and some people really just want to play Skyrim or Mass Effect.

I stopped playing Skyrim when I realized the reason I played so much was the excitement over discovering new content and not the content itself. If Skyrim was a linear game it'd be seen as laughably bad.

It's not so much a "mindset" and moreso a broken in habit. Their only exposure to interactive media is through videogames, so they view ALL interactive media through that lens. They see every game they play, even possibly boardgames as "videogames but physical". They don't do it on purpose, it's just something that's been bolted inside of most people's heads because TTRPG's are just such an esoteric and weird thing, even with as popular as they are today.
People in the space tend to also be quite autistic so they might have a habit or history of interacting with things in a very "codified" way, where they never go off the beaten path or try to break "what they think the DM wants of them" because they're afraid of upsetting the DM or "breaking the rules". More often than not, DM's actively WANT people to go off the beaten path and try to explore more in their own ways-- part of the fun of being a DM is dealing with random player bullshit like that.
Of course, sometimes it does get pretty annoying when you've got a guy who's ALWAYS trying to "break the invisible walls" or whatever. It just requires an even and nuanced hand. Which autists also struggle with.

Instead everything is matchmaking, single server MMOs, and the tools to setup matches otherwise are shit (not dedicated clan run servers). Multiplayer gaming got regressive as fuck.
