4X Games Civilization and Civ-alikes

So been playing a bit of Galactic Civilizations III recently, and have been enjoying myself, and was wondering what other 4xs are popular around here besides Civilization.

Currently playing on the 3rd largest map size with around 25 races, and things are going fairly competitive for me, the main problem being I seem to have pissed off the one race in the galaxy that has specialized in lasers, while my defensive techs were oriented against the mass drivers of my 3 neighbors. Needless to say that war is going poorly, and I've even seen a planet lost already.

My other favorite space 4x is Distant Worlds, although it's not really a Civ-alike the way GalCiv is, instead being realtime based (in the way paradox games are, not like the way like Anno 2070 is), which some intelligent automation options for larger empires. The part I really like about it is that you have to manage civilian space travel as well, trade lanes will develop on their own as privatly owned ships create their own economic paths, and as the government you need to ensure such lanes are free from piracy, war raids, etc. It also has generation options for a more space opera feel, such as your race just stepping into the stars while large empires already exist, some on the rise, some crumbling under their own weight, wars already raging, etc, instead of the usual planet/resource scramble most 4x games start with (Galciv to it's credit at least has good plot justification for the planet scramble in it's background lore).

So anyone else play 4x games, Civilization included.

So 4 years into a new game of Distant Worlds. Started pre-warp but with a developed galaxy. We've been brought into the galactic political stage by the Xenox, essentially Space Cats. They are currently the most powerful empire in our fringe of the galaxy, which makes it good they are friendly with us, and their only war is on the other end of their empire. They didnt give us warp technology though, we've had to reverse engineer it from ruins in our star system. We've had a massive influx of immigration from a neighboring race, and are working on setting our first colony up, or at least the technologies required. While at the moment the immigrant population is mostly a boon, the fact that we are on icy terms with the empire their race is from might cause internal issues if war breaks out, but at the moment we can't afford not to allow the immigration, as our own citizens are emmigrating to more technologically advanced societies.

My main concern is if the XHumans are in this particularly galaxy seed. Distant Worlds has an extra race mod almsot every overhaul mod uses, this one included, whose sole purpose is to be a foil to the humans and break up the sorta mega coalitions the humanoid races tend to form. The idea being they're essentially slightly genetically mutated humans, and the uncanny valley effect makes both strains of humans hate each other. But them being around and in a larger empire could really, REALLY fuck us over.

Build a wall across the galaxy to stop immigration and make other countries pay for it.

I don't need to keep the bird people out, that I can do easily.

I need a way to keep my people IN.

I'm so glad there is another DW player here. It's by far my favourite game though i only have a basic grasp on it.

Well, I'm convinced. This Distant Worlds game sounds great. I'll have to get it once it goes on sale.

It's a Matrix games published game. They.. don't tend to go on sale. That said it's $50 for the base game plus like 4 expansions, so it's already heavily discounted. Just make sure you get it from Steam as other retailers often still sell the piecemeal version. The last time it went on sale was a 24 hour flash sale. It might be on sale for the winter sale but don't hold your breath.

If you do, I highly recommend the Beyond Extended mod found in the link below. It's a compilation mod of sorts, and among other thigns includes somethings to make the ai far better at research prioritization.

Just ignore the music part, its tedious, a large file, and needs to be manually swapped depending on what race you want as the game never had racial specific music.

So, here's the state of the galaxy 28 years after a pre-warp start. Max size, 15x15 sectors, 1400 stars. Lots of burgeoning empires, and although the entire eastern half is dark to me, chances are there is just as much movement there as well. My empire is the blue one t words the south, and we're currently the 3rd largest by territory, although 11th by population. The pirates are a problem, and they've even established a fortress on two of my planets (or rather established it on independant colonies I bought into my empire), and I'm spending quite a bit to train up the planetary forces to dislodge them, but it should pay in dividends to get them out of my bloody territory.

No wars or anything have happened yet, but with the galaxy being as open as it is, everyone likely considers colonizing cheaper than fighting over existing colonies.

Yes, I love 4X games and have many titles. I should play them more often than I have lately. One I should really sink my teeth into is Endless Legend. I played a few hours of it, and it has a rather steep learning curve. The elements, story based quests, loot, and atmosphere in general is very exciting. I am not sure if you good folks stream at all, but this inspires me to fire up my dusty Twitch account and plonk around that game a spell.

Oh, I also bought Age of Wonders III with all the expansions for a song on GOG. I have not played that yet, but should.

As for Galactic Civilizations III, I was taking a look at that one on GOG as well, but I skipped it and bought Fallout New Vegas instead (but that's a whole other thread).

I almost play gsgs and 4xs exclusively. Am I autistic?

also, just dropping this webm here

One of my favorite games ever is Master of Magic, usually running either Halflings or Gnolls.
