One of the things I've learned in these feminism classes my employer has been mandating is that sometimes when we popularize things in media, we end up creating desensitization and social normalization. And that is why I believe that the movie Independence Day from 1996 was the pivotal moment with which society as a whole decided it was okay to fly airplanes into things.
