tom hanks is an old grumpy man. can a spicy latinx family next door make him ungrumpy? (the answer is yes)

pretty good movie but I am making this thread to announce there is a tranny in it. And I can tell, based on how they're included I think he/she is an actual afterthought.

the entire movie is centered around his relationships with his wife (dead), his black neighbors (old friends with health conditions), his latinx neighbors (new friends), and the realstate development company.

halfway through the movie tom hanks randomly bumps into a newspaper boy who announces they know him because they're the husband of their favorite teacher (the ONLY teacher who didn't treat them like a FREAK for being TRANSGENDER...). A couple scenes later apropos of nothing the same paperboy shows up to ask for a bed because their evil father KICKED THEM OUT for being TRANSGENDER (omg i almost cried).

What's funny is that there are ZERO scenes where this character (despite living at dom danks house) interacts with anyone else. There is no scene where they appear alongside another main character. Even at the end, when there is a will involved, the tranny is not mentioned at all. you could literally remove every scene they appear in and the movie would not change, like jar jar binks.

this made me lol

I looked it up and there is no trans character in the original (swedish) book that this movie is based on. They replaced two characters from the books with this FtM troon. One of which is a gay kid who gets kicked out of his parents house for being gay, lmao. OUT OF THE WAY LGB! MAKE ROOM FOR THE T!

Also in the original the neighbor woman is Iranian instead of Mexican, I guess that makes sense since it's set in Sweden.

Yup, they could not have made it more clear that the troon was replacing a gay character - you can tell even if you haven't seen or read the original Swedish version. Also, in the original version the Otto character goes to have a chat to the gay kid's father - and you don't see it, but by the next day the father welcomes the son back.

They could have, given it's an FtM, leaned into it. Otto's skills that he learns to value again are all stereotypically male skills, involving repairing and self-sufficiency - and by teaching them to the troon, it could be about teaching him to be a man far more literally. But suggesting a troon doesn't know how to be the gender they've declared themselves is verboten in Current Year, so the change is purely for woke points.

There's an FtM troon in 'Women Talking' as well, which is set in a highly repressive Christian sect where a few of the men have been drugging and raping the women. But they make sure to put in some line about how that's who they always really were, because God forbid the character be perceived as trooning out as a reaction to sexual trauma, an actual reason many girls want to transition, rather than because it's their True and Honest identity.

In both films, the troon could have fit the story better, but to do so would go against the Magical Born This Way narrative. So they just stick out badly instead.

I know you said it was an ok film, but I'm not watching it purely because they hamfistedly shoved a tranny into it with the force and roughness of your average dilation session. Stop giving them eyeballs, stop giving them an excuse to make this stuff. Yeah, I know They aren't in it for the money but it helps them justify it.
Not blaming you Null, I know you didn't know it was like that before watching it.

check out the divide:

I was actually looking forward to watching this after seeing teasers on Instagram. I ended up reading that they inserted a tranny and decided it was just another woke Hollywood POS.

>Troon gets shoved in last minute in a film I've never heard

Well, I'm glad my mom and I didn't go see this movie when she suggested it for lack of anything better to do. I'll just rewatch Gran Torino sometime instead.
