Aaron Hernandez, Football Player, Kills Himself in Prison - Apparently this is a national tragedy

MILFORD, Mass. -- Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, acquitted of a double murder just days ago, died after hanging himself in his prison cell Wednesday morning, Massachusetts prisons officials said.

Hernandez, 27, was found by guards in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley just after 3 a.m., Department of Correction spokesman Christopher Fallon said in a statement.

The former New England Patriots tight end was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster about an hour later.

Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit in the maximum security state prison. He hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a cell window, Fallon said.

Hernandez tried to block the cell door from the inside by jamming the door with various items, Fallon said.

Hernandez was moved to tears on Friday after he was acquitted of the 2012 fatal shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston.

But he was still serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for his conviction in the 2013 shooting of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee's sister.

Massachusetts State Police remain on the scene investigating the death.

I guess you could say the Tight End received more than he could tackle.

That right there is some epically good writing.

I knew Aaron personally, we went to the same high school. We had a few classes together and did track. I remember him in high school, it was a big high school, so it wasn't those small town schools with "the popular" and "the losers." Aaron was friends with people of all cliques, the musicians, the jocks, the stoners, you get the idea.
I hadn't spoken to him since I moved away after high school, but I followed him during his career as a Gator and a Patriot.
The emotions I have right now are weird. Losing an old schoolmate is rough, losing an old schoolmate who became a high profile murderer and having half the world going "good" is weird.
Aaron lost his father at the age of 15, he had heart surgery and was cleared to go back to work at the other high school in town, he dropped dead at work around noon about a week later.
Losing a parent fucks people up, but Aaron was FUCKED UP over his father's death. He would go to the local college and party with his old schoolmates when he got a break at South Florida. People would tell me would break down in tears over his father years later.
My high school was underfunded, I don't believe he was ever given the chance to get the proper help and consoling he needed. South Florida probably did, but by that time he probably learned to cope on his own, or thought he was.
A few days ago Aaron finally saw his daughter for the first time in years, he went from seeing her as an infant to a 4 year old, he probably wouldn't see her again until she was an adult, he probably was in pain over that.
We sometimes forget that celebrities are people too, and they grew up with actual people and have families.
I know I see the story of Aaron Hernandez differently than most, I see the sad story of a lost and angry boy who's pain is finally over. The saddest part is that the world will never see what I see.
Rest in peace Aaron, stay out of trouble this time.

Shit dude I'm trying to poke fun at people for blowing this outta proportion and you gotta hit me with the ultimate story like that. Fuck dude how am I gonna be ok with making fun of him when this shit is apparently a tragedy. Jesus dude I hope you're alright.

I'm OK, I cried a bit today, but my life will go on.
It's been a surreal expirence. I'm no saint about celebrity deaths, I laughed at Houston and Jackson and Carridine just like everyone else did.
Today just hit me with the realization that high profile people are....actually people.

You mean the University of Florida, not South Florida.

I wonder if the euphoria of being acquitted of double-homicide wearing off especially quickly when he realized that he still had nothing to look forward to except life in prison with the only time he'd likely ever spend off the grounds of a correctional facility being back in court for more charges/civil suits was the final blow?

I think that and seeing his daughter, someone he probably won't see again until she's an adult and he would never get to know.
