So, for my next PC game, I'm thinking of dipping my toe into the "arcade dogfight sim" genre. From my understanding, on PC, there are only 2 options: Ace Combat 7, and Project Wingman. One's an entry in a long-running and beloved series in said genre, the other's an indie effort to capture the "magic" of said series. Has any fan of the genre here played both, and if so, which one would you recommend for a first-timer? Be brutally honest here.

For your first time? Ace Combat. Project Wingman doesn't give you any checkpoints in the middle of your missions so if you're about to finish and you just so happen to Aloha Snackbar a transport plane as you're making a gun run on it (those things take three missiles), you're fucked.

I played both AC7 and PW and I think I enjoyed AC7 a little more, but it cost a lot more. Technically it's better but it's not $40 better. I'd so go with PW and see if you can get AC7 on sale or something. They are both worth playing eventually.

Does PW stand for Pilot Wings? If so, my vote is for Pilot Wings.

It's hard for me to encourage namco's "buy the rest of the game" dlc model. AC7 is the winner for me but I had less fun than AC5 on ps2.

if you're relying on checkpoints in an AC game you're fucking up. no way you're getting an S rank on ace if you checkpoint load, it completely fucks your score. you have to perfect the mission from the start or else why even bother.

Well, after much deliberation, and going over your replies, I've finally come to a decision. I chose......neither. I'm just gonna emulate AC4 instead, since I've heard that one's way better than 7. My PC can handle it, and with this video's help, I'm pretty sure I'll have a (somewhat) smooth experience.

if I can make a recommendation, once you've played AC4, pick up AC3. not the US release either, the JP release that had a massive TL patch released a few years back;
