It's even better than I hoped. Thank you Kono. Complete Sotoan extermination.

I'm very unimpressed so far.

I'm trying to keep an open mind - before early access I dropped a lot of money on an overdue PC upgrade including the storage necessary just to install the game. I'd prefer it if the game really wowed me, but currently it just feels like a rehash of 5.

I installed AC8 to my HDD instead of my SSD and now I'm stuck loading assets for the opening cutscene. That HDD is seeing 100% usage in Task Manager, probably a sign I should ditch it.

I've only ever paid full price for 2 games in my entire life: GTA V and Ace Combat 0.
This will be my third time... just to get AC0 again.

I hope preordering during the prerelease window still gets me the bonus. (:_(

It does.

For anyone that cares: AC0 on PC requires having AC8 installed and does not have its own achievements/etc.

AC0 on consoles is standalone with its own achievements/etc.

Ok, I finished the campaign. Took 14.7 hours with 2 mission restarts and about 4 short breaks. The game was definitely backloaded in terms of mission quality, though the superplane 1v1 was relatively unimpressive. They really cannot top the duel with Pixy at the end of 0 I guess. Anyway, I'd say the standout missions were 09, 21, 27 and 28. 27 and 28 in particular scratched my itch for AC6 levels of target density, though unfortunately one was mostly ground targets and the other entirely air targets, so mixed SPWs didn't really change the game for either of those. I also got very close to an all S-rank run on my blind first playthrough on Expert, which reinforces my notion that the missions are probably a little too easy. The only missions I failed to S rank were 22 (I hyperfocused the mission target, getting an A rank) and 28 (B rank, no idea why but I suspect I took too long in the final stage).

Although, true to series form, there is a hidden Ace difficultly unlocked after clearing the campaign. Maybe that will be more satisfying.

Also what the fuck am I doing with this plane tree? I have zero idea what I should be doing here to not accidentally fuck myself somehow.
You're meant to play the game multiple times, there's really not a way to fuck yourself. See a plane you think looks cool? Go unlock it. The only stipulation to that is that I suspect you'll be back on the carrier again at some point (i haven't finished the campaign yet) so probably not a bad idea to have a carrier capable plane that isn't the starting F/A-18.

idk, 8 I guess. Definitely better than 5, probably about par with 0 (AC8 has better gameplay/missions, more subdued/serious presentation, worse characters). Worse than 6 (6 is carried hard by its amazing gameplay) and 4 (my favorite in terms of narrative and presentation). Don't really like how the planes handle, especially the bad roll, but got used to it later. One thing I didn't get used to is how the standard missiles in AC8 feel like the worst in the series, about on par with 6's but with no [SHOOT] prompt to get the cracked guidance when you line up a perfect shot. It's still probably the best game I'm going to play this year.

Don't worry too much about the aircraft tree. Just zoom out, find your favorite plane, and beeline for it. If you like the game enough to do more than one run through the campaign, you'll get the rest. I never really felt like I was let down by not having a certain part or spw in my lineup.

The [SHOOT] prompt is there if you're behind the plane you're shooting at. Did it used to provide an additional lock on bonus?

In 6 specifically if you launched a missile while you had the [SHOOT] prompt it would boost the standard missile's tracking and the missile would adopt a lead pursuit intercept course instead of a pure pursuit course.

Fair. I could see that being a nice reward for proper positioning.
