The flares will break the locks on missiles fired even a little after they are deployed, so spamming them isn't super effective but you can spam standard missiles to bait them into PSM dodges. Shadow 22 and his group tend to fly straight after pulling one of their PSM meme maneuvers and can be relatively easily hit with QAAMs or SASMs afterwards, but you have to wait a bit since if you fire while they're still in the "post-stall" state the missile won't track. I think I got through the shadow fight in a little under 4 mins doing that. If you're good with the guns they're also easy to dunk on since they don't really react to you drawing a gun angle on them.

Might try a Meme playthrough with the Mig 21. One of it's special weapon is a giant machine cannon (I am pretty sure they kept that weapon in) so you can just hit the fire button and don't worry about aim mechanics

Honestly it's a little disappointing how there aren't any R-numeral planes in AC8 like the R-101. Would've been kino if it was an endgame plane alongside the FA-36
Maybe we'll see them in AC9.

Speaking of which since the timeline is getting closer to AC3 and we haven't seen alot of aircraft getting COFFIN modifications yet, I'm wondering as we get closer to the intercorperate war we'll see a mix of traditional aircraft and COFFIN aircraft? Cause I can see where planes with traditional cockpits would still be in play. Poorer nations, like the FCU, and mercenary outfits still relying on traditional planes. While mega corporations and states like OSEA and Yuktobania investing into COFFIN aircraft for their precived benefits over traditional fighters.

Idk I just think it be cool to see both traditional cockpit and COFFIN fighters at the same time.

There's always DLC 💰

Since Dision should be sublimated by now going off the AC3 timeline, they have the chance to do something really cool with a bonus mission story and truly bridge Electrosphere with the rest of the franchise. But I'd also be surprised if they did since PA rarely does more than brief references to other games.

Funnily enough, Aurelia (despite it being a third-world shithole) has issued COFFIN equipped aircraft in its air force in 2020 as well as Leasath with the XFA-24A, YR-99/YR-99B, XR-45 etc. so I don't know what the FCU is doing considering it only has hand me down rustbuckets for the majority of its aircraft fleet

Well the FCU is in Usea, which that continent is just fucked. From the Usean coup d'état, Ulysses, the First Continental War, Free Erusea, and the Lighthouse/Second Continental War, they probably don't have the budget to buy any new and up coming fighters. And the war with SOTOA made things worse since it cause more destruction than Ulysses.

I suspect they're saving that for DLC. In fact, when you think about it, it's perfect DLC material, whether it's you (Rex) fighting COFFIN fighters for the first time post-war, or you're a new faceless guy piloting the new COFFIN aircraft (and proving why it's OP as fuck). And if they go for the latter option, then they can really just set the game wherever they want a megacorp to stake their claim.

Usea is a pretty depressing setting come to think of it

Not surprising actually. Toprak himself has some magic bullshit plot shield that magically renders your missile tracking inert while having infinite flares. That said if you're good at using the machinegun he gets schooled nearly immediately.
it's never been more obvious how this game tries to soft-script fights like this when you go watch people fire a gorillion missiles Macross-style and not a single one hits from any angle (and also aforementioned infinite chaff & flare spam that has no cooldown). and even if you do hit a bunch, they have a TES-style "essential NPC" flag that keeps them from dying until an uncertain script activates and progresses far enough.

I thought Mihaly, and the Arsenal Birds' nonsense was egregious but some of the decisions to make enemies invincible in AC8 is just as bad if not worse.
