ActivityPub and the Fediverse

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
You can easily host your own instance and still interact with any other instance that does not explicitly block yours. There are even implementations like honk, which are meant to host only one user.
so would it be a bad idea to make an account for the kiwifarms instance, since it has a higher chance of being blocked by other instances?

Depends on who you want to talk to. Never mind that the people who block others for ideological reasons usually only federate with instances who also block the people they don't like. I'd rather make another account for the commie fediverse, on one of their instances, if I wanted to talk to them.

Blue checkmarks on Twitter be like "#blm #acab kill all republicans sent from my iphone"

Blue checkmarks on Fediverse be like "Eat our delicious Italian food! Fuck you Ethan Ralph and Vaush!"

I went there and scrolled the timeline for a bit and saw a picture of an anime child's panties being used as a coffee filter.

e: I fucking hate the fediverse already. The kiwifarms.cc one isn't blocking baraag, which I just learned about.

Oh and actual CP.

I can only really describe how i experienced it one way. If tweets are solid shits, fediverse posts (feeds? Is that why null is there) seem like liquid diarrhea. The kind you got because you thought that marinaded fish was still good. I wonder if that comparison makes sense to anyone else.

Besides a few isolated small pockets the time of interacting with strangers online in an interesting way is over anyways. No technology will solve it. It's the people themselves who are the problem.

Oh no, you made a feeder joke. Time for a half-hour long rant about how the joke isn't funny and how Null's life is now hell because someone called him a foodie hole fetishist.

Even if the kiwifarms instance is blocked by a lot of places. It's among the ones with highest amount of federation.

In any case, it's good practice to make an account on two different instances. One for shitposting, like the kiwi one (will get blocked by troons and fags), and one for the rest of the fediverse.

This is just a result of the decentralized nature of fedi. On the bright side, you don't have to wait for kiwifarms.cc to block baraag or any instance. You can block both individual users or entire instances yourself.

It's basically email with more social-media type functionality. You sign up to a provider and get an address and you can interact with anyone else unless your provider's been blocked by their provider.
It's not just Twitter-like platforms like Pleroma and Mastodon, you've also got stuff like Youtube-like platforms like PeerTube and Reddit-like platforms like Prismo on there, and if you're on one you can follow and reply to the others totally fine, you don't even need to actually visit the sites.

What is it, what makes it any better than honeypots like parler, retard magnets like gab, or something like twitter
I'm going to try and liven up this thread and explain this with my own limited experience.

The Fediverse refers to any software that uses decentralized networking protocols, such as Ostatus or, more recently, ActivityPub. To put it simply, while contemporary social media involves data being centralized and isolated in a big closed off database, federated social media involves "instances" (servers/nodes etc) where content is not just shared to clients that access them, but automatically shared and stored between instances when they interact with each other in specific ways. This ensures reach and longevity of information and makes it much harder for bad actors to censor it.

Also, most Fediverse services are open source and licensed under the copyleft AGPL license, meaning users are guaranteed transparency with how the software works, and the freedom to do whatever they wish with the software. You can host a fediverse instance wherever you want and on whatever kind of hardware you want as well.

With that all being said, here's a couple lesser known Fediverse projects you should look into.

WriteFreely (Minimalist Blogging)

Funkwhale (Soundcloud and Bandcamp alternative)

Lemmy (Reddit alternative)

EDIT: I've just been informed Lemmy has a hard coded wordfilter specifically to discourage "right-wingers" from using it.

Instead, I recommend you use
Lenny, the censorship free fork. Or try some other fediverse link aggregators like Prismo and Lotide.

Guac.live (Twitch alternative)

(Apparently this is federated but I can't find much info about them outside of their Github.)

And here's a cool website that collects analytics on Fediverse sites.

I'd also like to add that on a less technical level, it's just very comfy right now. Mastadon has been around for a long time and it's naturally gathered a mix of crowds and interests. As such, it's completely unlike gab where your feed is nothing but 800 iterations of "THE STORM IS COMING".

There are some politisperg bots, but you can block them en mass under their instance/domain names. I've been on there for a couple of months now and I'm very much liking it so far. Both Gab and Parler were miserable.

If someone was looking to channel surf the fediverse where wold they go? I want to get deeper but all I see is shit posting and reuploading bitchute content.
For anyone not banned wondering, I don't know what "get deeper" means, but the way I did it was by muting the entire mstdn.foxfam.club domain (it's 100% politisperg bots) . Then just manually mute politispergs you come across. Soon enough your feed is just made of fun stuff and random real people you can talk to without worrying about some tranny stomping his rainbow colored boot on your neck.

This service is already living up to its name.
