Aircraft Appreciators and Enjoyers Thread - Airbus vs Boeing and other autism

I'm gonna post some pictures to add to this thread.

You guys think the Dornier Seastar might actually make it to production finally.

First flight in 1984, has been ready for sale for decades. Has had its rights past through like 7 different companies who claim they are really actually totally going to bring it to production. and now the Chinese want to make it happen.

This thing looks beautiful but has some sort of curse that prevents it from dying and going into production. Prototypes going to be pushing 40 by the time the first production unit leaves the factory lmao.

I just find it hilarious we have a "NG" version of a 40 year old plane that's only had 2 aircraft ever built.

If I got an Icon A5 how quickly would be a video on Pilot Debrief talking about another idiot who killed himself and a love one through pilot error?
Seven minutes. Blancolirio would have one as soon as he gets back from his current long distance flight and APG would take the piss out of you next month.

Here’s a question for the autists. What’s the best plane ever and why is it the SR-71?

Not many people know this but it's one of the first military aircraft to use alternative eco friendly fuels. Engineers realized instead of using jet fuel it was actually cheaper to fill the fuel tanks with semi truck loads of money instead.

Though related I am a pretty big fan of the Swedish Viggens, not just the plane itself but also the concept of many different small roadside bases to distribute them as much as possible in the event of an invasion.

They also have an interesting history with the blackbird.

Not the viggen but its replacement.
Saab Gripen landing on a road. 4 retard…..Squadies and a technician can rearm it in about an hour.

DP: but I think the Uk should have bought some Gripens. We’re a small island and if the Russians nuked everything would need some aircraft which could take off from improvised airfields. Gripens seem like a great solution for taking off from a service station on what’s left of the M6.

Wait what the fuck, they don't? Considering how much of the plane is actually made in the UK I thought they had at least a small squad of them.

The Gripen is cool, but the Viggen will always be cooler in my eyes. Utilized many early advanced technologies, computers, data links, heads up displays and a lot of other at the time advanced technologies. I guess they blew so much money on it though it scared them off from ever making something like that again though.

Nice thread. I probably won't keep up with it day to day but I'm an airframe and powerplant mechanic, mostly working on 737s, so if you have any questions you think I could answer shoot them my way.

Do you think Boeing will turn things around? They’ve had a massive reputational kicking over the last few years

As of right this second, yes, I do think they'll turn around. They have a new CEO who seems to have a better attitude, and I think Boeing understands that their choice is now between accelerating towards death and a slow but steady reputation repair campaign. If they are very smart about it, I think they can be well on their way within a year, and we could see noticeable reputation improvements within 5 years. Here's their basic to do list:
-Ship the 777x and get the MAX 7 and MAX 10 certified asap so they can make customers happy
-fulfill orders faster by speeding up production lines
-fix their QA issues
-reaquire Spirit Aerosystems, or the parts of it that they need
-Put a new wing on the 787 if they want to compete with the A350
-repair their relationship with their employees and customers
-long term, develop a replacement for the 737 (I love her but she's an old gal and needs to rest) and do that mid size aircraft they've been talking about for ages

All of this hinges around better leadership and a better safety culture. Anyone with the "more with less" mindset of the old CEOs needs to be fired. Boeing was at its best when it was run like an engineering firm, and not like a company designing and manufacturing home goods. It should be a place run by needs who think going to the moon is fucking cool because that's how these types of companies run best. Skunk Works didn't create the insane shit they made because they were focusing on stock prices.

On a personal note, I've spent 2 years working on 737-800 and 737 MAX 8s. Both are incredible machines clearly designed by skilled, passionate people. For all the hate the MAX gets, it's not an inherently bad machine. It's designed just as well as the NGs. A company that can still produce something like the MAX has a lot of hope, but if theyrest on their laurels and just cash out the remaining reputation they have, they'll die. I'm optimistic that they won't.

Thanks, @French Dip , I know only one aircraft engineer in real life. He’s ex-RAF and it’s seems more like a hobby for him that lets him travel the world than a job for him so his eyes glaze over when it comes to aircraft autism so that was appreciated 😂
