AMID EVIL is a retro shooter set in a neon fantasy nightmare. it is often regarded as the Heretic to DUSK's DOOM due to the games' similarities in execution, but difference in visual theme. personally I believe that's a short sell - as much as I like DUSK, AMID EVIL's level design is way cooler. there's an RTX version too if your hardware can handle it.

the game consists of seven worlds with radically different visual styles, mutually exclusive enemy stables, and often inventive level geometry. the weapons are diverse and fun to use, and there's a soul system - a combination of Painkiller (enemies drop souls that give you a super mode when you collect enough) and the old Hexen/Heretic Tome of Power (soul mode supercharges your weapons and changes their behavior). also, the soundtrack is done by Andrew Hulshult.

I thought Dusk was more Quake than Doom. I did enjoy amid evil's bright cosmic fantasy more than Dusk's gloomy horror aesthetic if only because it was something unique in comparison to other FPS games.

If you want a Quake-like instead of a Doom-like I can highly recommend Prodeus. That game really surprised me when the pieces started falling into place.

Just to add to the above mentioned if you want more Quake-like check out HROT, it's basically like vanilla quake: very simple, but moody and fast paced (has a nice OST too.)

I'm currently playing through "Amid Evil", and both the music and overall ambiance of the game are just fantastic. There are very few titles that harken to power metal aesthetics.
