No one realized how much they wanted that shit until after the popularity of Fallout and Elder Scrolls Then audiences started crying for open world shit, leading to hundreds of games trying to appeal to the audience and haphazardly adding in open-world mechanics poorly in attempt to appease fans.
So many games that just added shit tons of open landscapes with nothing to do after that just so they could say they were open-world.
