Art conveys ideas. Allowing specific art or media is desensitizing people to let's say, war, crime, sexual abuse, and more.

Then zero 80s anime would be worth watching. It would have been a wasteland of ecchi romcoms and lolicon, and nowadays all the seasonal anime would use Mushoku Tensei's perviness as a baseline.

That's a damn good anime though, and it's one of the only times a character's stereotypical over-the-top anime perversion is story-centric and a character flaw for him to overcome.

...Of course, the issue being that Japs are too deeply perverted to see the irony of writing such a story and still keeping the character as a pervert in that stereotypical way, just less exaggerated. Like, in their eyes he's normal now after his character progression, but he's still deeply perverted because their baseline over there is so fucked up. "See? He learned not to molest his sleeping underage cousin, now he's just having consensual sex with her!"

There wouldn't have been any realistic sci-fi shows like Macross and Votoms (which were made due to Gundam's initial cult success), so the studios would have fully capitalized on the lolicon trend to make money. Nanako SOS was a mainstream adaptation of a loli ecchi manga by Hideo Azuma, the inventor of lolicon. Minky Momo got extra episodes due to its (unintended) lolicon fanbase. They were even going to make a TV anime of a loli HENTAI manga (Gekisatsu Uchuuken), but it was thankfully cancelled due to interfering with the production of the Macross movie.

Nobody's ever heard of anything you just cited except Gundam and Macross, I don't think you have to worry about an alternate future where obscure loli shit goes mainstream, it's inherently niche.

Gundam Wing is a shit entry in the franchise. It's a story about overly melodramatic pretty boys and their gay little problems. The story is so shit the original director got kicked off halfway through the series. It does have some slick mecha designs to it's credit but to me it's a bland, boring show. It may have been a commercial success but lots of shit series have similar success: Naruto, High School DXD, Fushigi Yugi, etc. It's just style over substance. It's fine if you like it, I like tons of bad shows myself but liking something doesn't mean it's a great piece of media.
