So one of my favorite things to do when watching anime is pause and read any time there's English text on a computer screen. Nine times out of ten, its something A) unrelated to the anime and B) completely out of left field, usually leading you to learn something if you go Googling.
Here's some examples:
From Burn-Up W, episode two
I had to look up who "Billy Schuss" was. One Google Search later, I find out Billy Schuss is a guy who formed an organization to assist refugees from Castro-era Cuba, and was also a war hero. And no, he has nothing to do with the plot of this anime.
From Tekkaman Blade, episode 5.
This girl's name is Aki Kisuragi. So "who the heck is Andrei Tarkovsky?" Apparently he makes really surreal, dreamlike films. I had never heard of him before seeing Tekkaman Blade.
So like... how the heck are Japanese anime creators just sitting on knowledge about random war heroes and Russian filmmakers?
One more, because three is a good number to end on:
I actually posted about this in another thread. Anyone who is decently versed in classic eighties movies will recognize this text (despite the one typo). What you won't guess is what anime this was in: Sailor Moon, episode 9
I also have memories of seeing an anime where the text on a computer screen was a rant about how western anime fans have a problem of assuming anime is at all accurate to what life in Japan is like. I think it was either Lupin the 3rd: Angel Tactics, or else End of Evangelion. If I find it I'll post it.
In the meantime, if you see any screens like this, post them yourself! This shit's awesome.
