The reason why I made this thread, i used animate but i fell from it do to stupid depression and shit, now it feels like I am back at square one and i want to practice again and collaborate with people that have some experience.
Well, I am no big animator, I have made a few shorts here and there and once I made a gif of some fat bastard running on a treadmill (posting a unfinished version if anyone from the dobson thread thinks I'm bullshitting).
I just joined this community and I am curious to see if there are any animators here, I'd like to get back into the groove, maybe even to a stupid thing together just to get back into the habit of animating.

One way to get back in the groove is to do something fun/experimental. Maybe you could have his fat jiggle as he runs, make him squash and stretch, have the camera shake a little bit each time a foot hits the ground, really accentuate that fatness.

That looks like Andrew Dobson not going to lie.

But yeah I am an animator, many people on here are artists and animators also but not really sure asking "who an animator," is going to help you get back into the groove though?
It is, but yeah, I don't know anybody around here so I just wanted to see who are considered the greatest in the trade, you know?

That's actually a neat idea, I should start with updating that running cycle to get a feel for that squash and stretch :D

I wanted to go into animation, if that counts--I took 3D animation in high school, and wanted to work with it more, but that fell through (even though I took a career path that promised animation since it was film and video production). I'm more into the idea of concept art than animation, and I've come to appreciate storyboard artists, the unsung heroes of all things in motion picture.

But hey, from one artist to another, you're doing great for someone who hasn't done much animation in ages. The torso is rather stiff for someone who's flabby, though, so he looks like a chicken when he runs and bobs his head like a pigeon, but the legs work fine. It's actually a good thing there's no motion blur to his legs (there might have to be a little bit in the long run, save that decision for the last minute tbh), goes to show just how slow he is on the treadmill or wherever.

He should sway like flan pudding every time he lifts a foot.

I dabble, haven't done so recently. The process as to how it's produced and the people who make it is definitely one of my interests though.

I wish I could animate. I don't have the skill nor the attention for it.

@FadBag . Wasn't a giraffe apart of this art?
That was the final piece yes, it started with the idea of "Have him running on a treadmill chasing a hamburger on a string" around the time i was making it the hilarious antics of drawing giraffes with the goggles addon on his DA profile happened and someone said "Make it a giraffe holding the hamburger" and that's basically how we ended up with my magnum opus

I had to do an animation class in art school. One time I ever expected the teacher to bring the gun to class.

Was the class that bad or did the class give the teacher a hard time?

None of us really wanted to be there but it was mandatory. The school used to have a full on animation program but only a few kids ever took it and not many stuck with it. Not sure why they kept the department or if its even around anymore.

The teacher was not some nobody, he worked on quite a few cartoons I'm sure most of us has seen (Animaniacs, was I think a lead on the Loony Toons classic Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers, which he says was made in protest to stuff like Tiny Toons).

I personally found making animation tedius but I can appreciate the work.

Like others have said before, to want to stay with an animation, it has to be fun, especially is there isn't monetary incentive.
I'm reminded of the work of Felix Colgrave. Here's his youtube.
He's a relatively young animator from what I remember from reading on his website, and he mentioned how he tackled big projects that took 2 plus years by keeping it constantly fun.

He might not have planned out a lot of his shorts or images, just worked with fractals and patterns he'd gotten used to and mastered, and he let the characters he introduced on screen tell the story.
I'm sure he did some planning, but leaving it open ended can get rid of some of the stress that comes with such a demanding and time consuming art.

---

Also, I'm reminded of Ren and Stimpy, the crazy guy who made em. Well, his rule was never to draw the same face or expression, so that kept the animation constantly changing, but with a deadline, animating like that lowkey sounds like a nightmare.

i had a similar experience. went into a 3D animation college program, dropped out after a year (out of 3). i did enjoy animating, just not in 3D. though i don't have nearly the attention span for it.

i didn't end up in an artistic career (and wouldn't want to) but i considered storyboarding.

it's hard enough to have animation look good when it's on model, going off model and still having it look good is a whole other level. John K might be a crazy asshole, but his skill as an animator is very apparent. to see how to do "deliberately" off-model animation poorly, see Steven Universe.

I'm trying to teach myself how to animate, finally got around to starting a month or two ago. Only managed a short loop or two, I usually get partway in, realize it looks terrible and move on to something else.

It took me a weekend to make this short loop.

I've been doodling at this off and on for a couple weeks now, I hope to finish it at some point.

I really like Hollow Knight, lol.

Apparently it was a nightmare, John K. is just that much of a perfectionist. Some people just can't work well with a team, but animation is a team effort. Very few animators can say they could do an entire production by themselves, but they have to do it on their own dime. There's a reason The Thief and the Cobbler is considered a cinematic marvel since it was pretty much a one-man production with some helping hands here and there, but Richard Williams, from his stubborn ignorance or not, ended up getting it torn away from him before he could finish it and that is why it became such a mess at the end of the day. It's rather miraculous the "Recobbled Cut" found its way out, but as much as the fans are extremely dedicated to the film and some wish they could be able to finalize the pencil tests, no one can make it as meticulous as Williams could, and I don't think anyone would dare to. In fact, it's quite possible some of the techniques used to make it have now been lost since cel-animation is practically dead thanks to digital animation, and CGI and AI algorithms are taking over.

Also not helped that so few people still live from the Golden Age of Animation. Losing Williams last year was a huge blow to that part of animation history; I don't even know if he ever finished the last project he was working on.

What you posted is cute AF and looks really good, I suggest you look up Toniko Pantoja on YouTube, the dude has excellent animation tutorials and great pointers on how to stay motivated.
The only thing I need to get back is my focus and It's slowly coming together :)
