I love Wizardry and the games inspired by it (like Mary Skelter), TBH. Grid-based first person RPGs are so underrated in current gaming discourse.

What Wizardry clones would you recommend, and did any of you have any memorable experiences while playing one?

Tentatively recommend the Grimrock games, though some argue that they're not true members of this genre. Beyond that, Might and Magic games are variably good, with some people placing the high point at the Xeen games and others placing it at 6 with a smattering of dissenting opinions hither and thither. The Eye of the Beholder games fall into this category though I'm given to understand that the later installations are considered outright bad. The Ultima Underworld series comes to mind as well.

This is probably more of a dungeon crawler jrpg but the Etrian Odyssey series draws a lot of inspiration from the Wizardry series, Atlus also put out Dark Spire which is closer to more traditional RPGs from what it looked like.

Seriously?! Thanks so much for letting me know.

Also, it's so confusing as to who even owns the rights to Wizardry 1-5. It seems to be either Aeria Games, GMO Internet, or ProSiebenSat.1 Media from my research. Fuck whichever one of these companies withholds Wizardry 1-5 from public release.

That's nice. Now if they also were to port its sequel which was JP only, then XSEED could get more praise.

Anvil of Dawn.

Super atmospheric. Also I like that you pick one of five characters to begin with and meet all the other four at different points in your travels. Rather nice music as well and suitably weirded out and nightmarish enemies as well.

The early Shin Megami Tensai games were grid based first person RPGs and are pretty unique. You can find fan-translated versions of the SNES ROMs if you look around.

These.

And also Japan loves Wizardry so if you can stand clicking through moonlanguage or understand it then there's a bunch of shit you can play.

You can probably get a ROM of the SNES version of Wiz 5 without too much hassle. (That's actually how I played it.)

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey on the DS. It's pretty long, but very atmospheric.
