Any VoIP app recommendations?

I'm looking into getting VoIP numbers and want to ditch AT&T for calls and messaging. I'm in an unfortunately long process (mainly because of funds) of deGoogling all my shit and getting rid of AT&T.

I heard about JMPchat and XMPP protocol. Main concern is text messaging from me (with the VoIP setup) to my family, who all use Apple devices.

Also for data, I'm thinking of getting a Calyx Institute hotspot. I'm open to other suggestions.

The only thing I know about that is that a family member uses Rakuten Viber and works well.
