I wouldn't say that. IIRC, isn't this type of practice incredibly illegal on YouTube? Like, jail time and fines illegal, given they still haven't properly disclosed in the video that this is a paid promotion/sponsor for their own game?

But they have a link to their beta testing form in the description - that should totally get them in the clear, right?

Yeah it would.

...If it weren't for those two other videos. Y'know it's the darnedest thing, they don't seem to have descriptions telling people this. I wonder why. :story:

Holy actual shit, I've never seen marketing as obviously scummy as this fake Russian bootleg game. Arin's actually managed to surpass himself

Looks like people aren't exactly amused with the recent Grumps antics (Arin's fake wokeness thank to questionable tabs/the fake 'Russian Bootleg' marketing ad, etc) - seeing as they lost 20k subs overnight.

tbf, I checked a couple of other random youtube channels on socialblade and on December 3rd some of them lost a good chunk of followers, so I'm assuming it's youtube getting rid off old, unused channels or bought followers or whatever?

I think you're right; however, Looking at the daily/weekly/monthly averages for the other channels that I looked at (markiplier, Jacksepticeye, JonTron, SuperMega - just to give some examples), they all seem to be gaining. Game Grumps, however, shows a drop.

Edit: Also, the 'Russian Bootleg' trailer has been dropped.

I know it's kind of apples to oranges, but Jirard just released a video on updates to the channel in the upcoming year like he does around this time annually:

Transparency, clear communication, concerns for the quality of the show and for the enjoyment of the viewers, planning for the future of the channel, using his fame and resources to help prop up smaller channels, not hinging all his bets on YouTube, nearly 20 people in his employ. Jirard really knows what the fuck he's doing which makes Arin's floundering and blaming the algorithm even more impressively pathetic. I don't think Untitled Grump Show or whatever the fuck it's called has had nearly as much information as in this video after, what, three months? What the fuck is Dan and Arin's Grumpdate Programme even for? Their own satisfaction?

If it were for any other reason, they wouldn't be doing it. Arin likes to start and say he's working on a lot of projects because it makes him seem like a harder worker than he actually is.

You don't underSTAND, they put in EFFORT. It's brave and courageous and how dare, how DARE you criticize them for it.

“It’s an ARG, the deception is awesome.”

You can’t just paste “It’s an ARG” over every shit piece of viral marketing. There was literally no way for people to interact and experience the actual “G” part, it was solely “Watch this video about Arin playing bootlegs! Now watch a few more! Now what’s this, a weird game that he can’t get working? What could it- SIGN UP FOR OUR SHITTY BATTLE ROYALE!”

I heavily, heavily doubt that this thing will ever actually happen.

You know, I was just thinking it was a scummy thing, but this comment made me realise.

It's the fucking visual novel equivalent of an ARG. It's an ARG that's all cutscene.

I stopped actively following his vids but I still poke in for a vid he does for NG+. Jirard reminds me of Arin in so many ways from how his business started but is like a choose your own adventure story outcome. Dude has been fighting the system for years, had the massive legal issue with Greg, and has been building his own franchise for years. Even offering an outlet for smaller influencers to push their merch through him.

I'm sure if anything 2020 will prob the last year many people stay with Youtube full time due to COPPA and slowly make Twitch and Mixer their new home. But props to Jirard for pushing out the content consistently and staying the same throughout it.

Every time there’s a hot new video website that’s totally gonna destroy YouTube it fucking dies. Remember Vidme?

I'd say the difference here is there's real legal backing this time if it goes south.

YT has been just worse and worse and more people have to do the brand deals LIKE RAID SHADOW LEGENDS, just to make that money more so then ever in 2019. Only because YT has been dropping the ball and it's simply an outlet to advertise the creators.

Projared was a great example where in every youtube video now(even during his recovery after the Heidi thing) told people to go to his twitch to support him.

You add in a legal liability that can and will get you fined when you already gotta sell your soul to Honey or Manscaping to get your vid out there and it's not gonna be good. Even if they're not fined the majority now knows about COPPA and what it'll do so more and more will venture elsewhere to watch their content since the YT well will dry up.

I don't think a new video hosting service will happen, but video streaming will be the next best thing especially with how much Twitch has grown even on TV advertising.

Every time a youtuber promotes a shitty mobile game it reminds me of that episode of South Park where Jimmy is paid by Canada to promote their freemium game.
“And best of all, it’s totally free! I mean come on!”

Well Twitch (Amazon) and Mixer (Microsoft) aren't exactly "fly by night" youtube competitors and Microsoft has taken its competition with Google in the video game space very seriously (by using Gamepass to horifficly shit on Stadia and by working with it's smaller competitors [Nintendo and Sony]).

Mixer in particular has been poaching talent from Twitch (Ninja, Shroud) and there's no reason to think they wouldn't be looking at YouTube's talent the same way, especially given how badly YouTube has been treating them, it may not take much to get them to switch over.

Amazon and Microsoft both have the backend to host video content (and Amazon already does) and they've both had 10+ years to learn from all of YouTube's mistakes.

I mean it was so much so Satan had to actually explain why they were so bad. I found that shit hilarious.

But it really brings a point that shit like that has so much weight in the market that advertisers want to put it out there.

I remember Eruption advertised Elsword for a bit and I was like "People still play this shit?"

I’m glad I’ve never paid money for a freemium game. I remember getting addicted to simpsons tapped out and I was like “I only play it in my free time! It’s just a time management game!” It was so autistic specifically choosing all the tasks to do and how long they had to be for.

I think the big thing most YT to those sites people will have to adjust to is the idea of their content. Since youtube is put in ways you can just watch a vid and enjoy it almost episodically I'm not sure how people like Jirard or ones like Scott the Woz and Stop Skeletons will adjust if they go that route. Since YT is so easy to share a vid around while with twitch to even view clips you need an account in some cases which not everyone is prone to making. It's gonna be weird showing off an edited vid in that ground for ease of access when its not on YT.

It'll be interesting to see how they adapt to it in the final span of their time on YT.
