In the vast sea of film critics on the internet, not many particularly stand out. Lots of critics share similar opinions regarding films and other matters. Armond White makes an exception.
Armond White has a history of going against the grain of popular opinion when it comes to reviewing films. He was the first professional critic to give a negative review of Jordan Peele’s debut feature Get Out (2017) [A] which ruined it’s perfect (at the time) Rotten Tomatoes score [A]. He’s given negative reviews to acclaimed Oscar winning and nominated films like La La Land (2016) [A], and Parasite (2019) [A] while he also gave positive reviews to otherwise panned films like Dirty Grandpa (2016) [A] and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) [A]. Armond White believes Zack Snyder and Michael Bay are two of the greatest filmmakers in the modern era. He’s black and gay, but also a christian with right-wing political opinions. For some, Armond White is the ultimate contrarian.
Armond White has faced a few criticisms. The late Roger Ebert once claimed Armond White to being a "troll" [A]. White was also the subject of controversy when he was kicked out of the New York Film Critics Circle for allegedly heckling director Steve McQueen [A]. Despite his reputation among some people, I’m not making the case for him to be a Lolcow (hence why the thread is in Multimedia). However, given he is a unique voice among film critics, I think a thread on him could be useful. This thread will be used to chronicle Armond White’s reviews, articles, and internet presence. It can also be used to discuss and debate the topics and opinions of the most controversial film critic around.
