I was surprised to find there wasn't an existing thread for Ashens so I decided to make one just in time for the 2024 Advent series.

For those of you who somehow don't know about Ashens, Dr. Stuart Ashen is one of the true legends of YouTube. He's been putting out good videos since 2006 and in all that time he has managed to avoid noteworthy drama or scandals to the degree that I am unable to think of any. The closest thing I can think of is him appearing in one of Jim Sterling's "I'm losing subscribers" specials and the fact that he was very briefly a contributor to TGWTG before the Channel Awesome rebrand.

Aside from avoiding drama Stuart is known for his signature brown couch tat videos and regular series like doing advent every year.
Since it's the most pertinent at this time, the Advent series deserves a bit more of an explanation. This annual tradition began in 2012 and consists of opening an advent calendar every day from December 1st through to Christmas. In 2015 the series changed forever with the controversial addition of Dan from the NerdCubed channel. Since then it has evolved into a contest where they open competing Advent calendars and determine who got the best thing(s) that day with subsequent years including punishment calendars for the loser and victory calendars for the winner.

In the year of our Lord 2024 there's no less than 6 calendars with Stuart and Dan each taking 2 as well as a punishment and victory calendar. Finally the Advent series typically starts with the first day intro on the main channel and continues on the second channel, in fact there have been only 6 non-advent videos uploaded to the second channel since 2018 leaving it basically unused for 11 months out of the year.

Ashens has also made a pair of feature length films you can find on his channel, and is working on a third.

Anyway that's enough rambling. Discuss Ashens content in this thread. If you've never heard of Ashens or haven't seen his videos I genuinely envy you and the massive backlog of quality content you get to experience.

My only complaints with Stuart are that he's besties with Nerdcubed (who is a massive sperg) and Jim Sterling.
Also his movie is unfunny and is only better than the TGWTG movies because it's technically competent. The jokes, writing and references are all the same, tired shit these fucking losers spit out constantly.
Aside from his bedfellows and bad movies, his reviews are funny and I still have fond memories of watching his Chintendo Vii video on my Wii about 17 years ago. And he helped fuel my love of shitty chinese toy soldiers.

His friends are a bit of a double edged sword. Nerdcubed is a massive faggot and I don't like him but he doesn't ruin the advent series, at least not IMO. I think the addition of a second person and the calendar contest format adds enough entertainment value that it's worth tolerating his cringe. I don't think the series would have survived this long if it was just Stuart opening a calendar by himself for 12 years. His friendship with Sterling is pretty minor and doesn't really play a role in his content. I say it's a double edged sword because if Stuart remained strictly solo content we would be denied all of the great videos he's done with Barry Lewis, including the entire Barshens channel, and the handful he's done with GuruLarry.

EDIT: aside from general faggotry I think what I dislike most about Dan is his decision to go with NerdCubed instead of NerdToTheThird.

100% Agree. In fact I've only ever watched Quest for the GameChild once, I never bothered watching Polybius Heist, and I don't have particularly high hopes for his current Horror Movie project. Even if it bucks the trend of competent but cringe horror is not a genre I particularly enjoy and what I do like from it is almost exclusively classic examples. I blame his dabbling with films for the decline in upload frequency we've seen the last few years and I would much rather he focus on putting out more videos.

Ashens videos got me through some rough patches in my life and I’ll always appreciate him for that. Even though I haven’t watched a video from him in years, it’s nice that an old YouTuber I like hasn’t become a complete degenerate loser, political sperg or tranny.

Really loved the videos he made on video game tat, like all the trash they give you for limited editions and such. His food reviews were also a fun time! Think I’m going to binge his videos again, thanks for reminding me he exists!

On the other hand, he's British so he can't oppose it, saying nothing would be "rude", and it wasn't part of his own content.

On a third, hideously deformed, mutant hand, imagine letting that fat troon faggot Jim Sterling deny you the entertainment of Ashens videos.

I wish some Emirati rich fuckboy funded 9 additional seasons of Barshens with full animation and special effects, and not the dreadful podcast segments. It was likely the entertainment peak of the careers of (nearly) everyone involved. Paul Gannon and Eli Silverman are fun on-stage, but their little homoerotic podcast is an exercise in misery. Good if you like gawking at knotted ratkings who talk about cup noodles all day. Silverman in particular is like a fatter, more jewish Jabroni Mike that, somehow, sucks fewer dicks.
In a similar vein, the Sequelisers podcast which (shortly) featured Ashens was great – until most of the people left, leaving only three dipshits each on a varying scale of communist and bald that, while they might be decent script writers, don't make for the most entertaining lot. Out of all of them, Matthew Stogdon dips closest to noncehood.
Really, Ashens is probably the least interesting one of the whole lot. He's a solid straightman, and a private man outside that, and good on him for that.

I enjoyed his videos years ago but I stopped watching because I got sick of every video having an advertisement for whatever crap he was making on the side, like that Gamechild thing.
Heard he's an insufferable woke faggot these days, which doesn't surprise me, he always was a manchild loser.

The British retrogaming scene is teeming with faggotry, so it's hardly surprising some of his friends and acquaintances are twats. NostalgiaNerd is another one, though idk if he has much to do with NN after the Barcadia debacle.

As for Ashens, I like his old stuff better than his new stuff.

His movies come across as vanity projects. He seems to shoehorn as many of his fellow retrogaming identities in them for cameos as possible, which doesn't make the movies any better. It just makes them look like more circlejerk than film.

One of the most fascinating things to me with a channel as old as Stu's is seeing the scars of the website's ever-shifting metagame borne out in the channel uploads. Like the stretch of time where everything was getting uploaded on the extras channel; I don't think he really had a reason for it, the videos didn't really change in terms of subject matter or quality, it was just the style back then.
