Authoritarianism scale quiz

I'll take "baited questions" for 500, Maury. When you state things like this and use them to measure whether or not one is an authoritarian, it's obvious that they think less of us for daring not to be leftists.

3. Our country desperately needs a mighty leader who will do what has to be done to destroy the radical new ways and sinfulness that are ruining us.
Why can't we have a secular, strong leader? What's wrong with that?

8. There is absolutely nothing wrong with nudist camps.
Of course there is, you don't wanna see all those flabby pervs naked.

21. Homosexuals and feminists should be praised for being brave enough to defy "traditional family values".
Holy fucking shit.

Survey is pretty rigged.

Things like this are also pretty context-sensitive. For instance, suppose the world situation is particularly tenuous and world war appears imminent. At that point, a more strong, authoritarian leader makes practical sense. Think Winston Churchill.

In a time of peace and prosperity, someone more aimed at the domestic makes more sense.

Someone who would be a good leader in one set of circumstances might be a terrible leader in another.

Yeah, this test sucks shit and just reminds me of the old adage of "it's important not to be so open minded your brain falls out". It also totally jumps to the conclusion that just because you live one way/think it's best you're willing to force other people to go along with it.

I got 80%
I think I would have been higher if I interpreted SJWs as not being the established authorities

Then you should approve of being banned, because any set of mods who scored that high on authoritarian would have taken about 10 minutes to ban your autistic ass.

I think this entire quiz is actually just a thoughtcrime scale quiz

  • Agree
Reactions: Big Nasty
36% Authoritarian, a pretty low score. My tendencies do generally lean libertarian.

Leftists could easily score high on this quiz, I think the more 'baited' questions vis a vis family values and religion are just speaking to the fact that authoritarian leaders tend to rely on these tropes to garner support. Very low scores reflect essentially anarchist leanings, ~50% is probably fairly moderate (if the quiz is designed halfway decently, anyway, since shit like this should always be about establishing a bell curve), etc.

Looking at this section of the wiki page, I'd say the quiz at first glance is a fairly accurate reflection of the most prominent theories of authoritarianism today:
Right-wing authoritarians want society and social interactions structured in ways that increase uniformity and minimize diversity. In order to achieve that, they tend to be in favour of social control, coercion, and the use of group authority to place constraints on the behaviours of people such as political dissidents and ethnic minorities. These constraints might include restrictions on immigration, limits on free speech and association and laws regulating moral behaviour. It is the willingness to support or take action that leads to increased social uniformity that makes right-wing authoritarianism more than just a personal distaste for difference. Right-wing authoritarianism is characterized by obedience to authority, moral absolutism, racial and ethnic prejudice, and intolerance and punitiveness towards dissidents and deviants. In parenting, right-wing authoritarians value children's obedience, neatness, and good manners.[1]

Right-wing authoritarianism is defined by three attitudinal and behavioral clusters which correlate together:[14][15]

  1. Authoritarian submission — a high degree of submissiveness to the authorities who are perceived to be established and legitimate in the society in which one lives.
  2. Authoritarian aggression — a general aggressiveness directed against deviants, outgroups, and other people that are perceived to be targets according to established authorities.
  3. Conventionalism — a high degree of adherence to the traditions and social norms that are perceived to be endorsed by society and its established authorities, and a belief that others in one's society should also be required to adhere to these norms.[16]

Pretty much all of those questions fall under one of those three categories; having one or two of the three (or all three to some degree) doesn't necessarily equate to supporting authoritarianism. On top of that, it's probably not so much intended to say 'if you score 100% you are definitely in support of authoritarian dictators' but that if you score very highly and you weren't well versed in politics/economics/foreign relations/history/whatever the fuck, and didn't put careful consideration into your vote, you'd potentially be susceptible to the rhetoric of an authoritarian leader.

That kind of makes sense though, doesn't it? Authoritarian leaders are more prevalent in countries at high risk of invasion or during periods of internal tumult, and Churchill was pretty authoritarian, overall, which is why he got voted out of parliament so damn fast after the war.

These kinds of "answer some questions and we'll tell you what your political convictions are" quizzes are always bullshit.

To be fair, this one's based on a psychologist's research into the rise of authoritarian regimes and the mindset behind their popular support. That's not to say you're not right, but this one's not without some basis.
