Feedback Autistic avatar question

How come I can't upload a gif file well below the avatar size limit? Even when frames are reduced unless the gif resolution is very smol it won't let me use it as an avatar. Are there other restrictions I should take into consideration?

It is below 250kb. 186kb I believe. Frame limit or resolution limit?
 
What did you do to it to make it smaller? I resized my avatar in GIMP using the scale tool and now it's usable.
 
it is a frame thing. If you use like 9 frames outta the gif regardless of size (250) it works. Vs higher frames not working well below the size limit. Dunno why but eh it doesn't matter.

Don't bother trying, i was going to use a porn gif (it's cropped, nothing explicit on image) on my avatar but realized the animation won't play so i quit.
 
I think the upper limit for gifs is around 128 kb for some reason. It's been like that for a while. I'd recommend https://ezgif.com/'s optimization tools to work around the limitation. Reducing the color palette can cut a surprisingly large amount of data off the gif without much of an effect on the picture.

What I was tryina say is 250kb limit is peanuts and the gif format has some unseen rules about frames and shit.

Also she looks like she is vibrating.
 
Methinks null doesn't like gif avatars very much. I don't know what's going on with gifs, because mine has 11 frames and 126 kb and I could upload it. Another one was 13 frames and 200 kb and i could upload it. Yet a 21 frame one I had before that needed to be cut down to 76 kb. With consistency like that I'd guess a crystal ball is involved somewhere in allowing gifs as avatars.

These were animated before & are animated when I post them elsewhere. They're less than 9 KB & I can't figure out wtf is wrong.

EDIT: NOW they work, but still not as avatars.

Big thanks to @BOLDYSPICY! for the awesome work making the great artwork. But yeah we are having some big probs when we try using them......

My little puffy baby Kiwi won't bob n' weave and dance when I'm trying to use it specifically as an Avatar which is bizarre? Any help is heaps appreciated

So are there specific things that cause the animations to not play? My current one is supposed to be animated and if I try to switch back to my old one the animation doesn't play either anymore.
I've tested it with larger gifs (image, file size, and both) and they seemed to work. I'm wondering if it's a frame thing or if it is actually random? I'm pretty retarded sometimes so I'm sure if I'm missing something.
 
Edit: Nevermind, I'm a mong who thought the avatar preview actually previewed the avatar (:_(

The issue with these avatars should be fixable with the following advice plus a bit of legwork for @BOLDYSPICY! to determine the right settings in whatever software they used to make the avatars:

Here are two of them I got working as animated avatars by just cramming them in my GIF editor and clicking the "Remove Autism" button:

There are some weird transparent spots left over from the original GIF's disposal settings, so I'd recommend exporting the originals with the correct disposal settings rather than actually using these. I'm just including them so you can test them and see that they work.

Yes on both counts. What you're missing is that you monged out and saved that GIF file with a JPG extension. If you change the extension to .gif it'll work just fine.

You can tell that's the issue because the animation plays when you visit the image directly. Most browsers have some CSI Miami shit to determine what a file actually is so they can handle it correctly, but they don't generally run it on regular webpages because analyzing every single file would slow things down.

The only mong here is you friend. I'm uploading gif files that are gifs. Animations play on the upload screen but apparently it gets converted to a .jpg for the main avatar.
At least now I have an idea what the issue is.

Huh, you're right, I've updated my post to honor my mongol ancestors. For some reason I expected the preview to actually work. No idea what it clobbers the piss out of the image, then.
