I'd never heard of him before, then he said something stupid and now I have. If even ten or twenty people end up looking into his music because of this, that's ten or twenty sales he wasn't getting otherwise. And I doubt anyone who was going to buy his stuff is going to say "wait, isn't this the flat earth rapper? No way, dodged a bullet there".
When you're trying to move a product, any attention, even negative attention, is better than zero attention.
That said I bet this is a scam. Still, I have a grudging respect for charlatans. Fools are going to be parted from their money one way or another, so I can't spend too much energy hating the person who makes sure that money ends up in their pocket first.
