I got a little baseball tinfoil hat sperging I got to get out.

I don't know if anybody has looked at the profile pics for MLB's official twitter/Instagram but they have been changing quite frequently this month. I feel like a retard for not archiving any of it so you'll just have to DUDE TRUST ME on this one but this has been what I remember of the timeline.

June 1st : Change to Pride MLB logo for pride month, to both negative and positive reception.
June 2nd: Change to Honor Lou Gehrig for Lou Gehrig day as is tradition every year
After Lou Gehrig day I wondered if they would go back to the default logo, or change back to the pride logo, it has been neither
After June 2nd: I can't remember exactly what it was but it was some profile pick to honor some Prospect/Minor league thing they were doing
Somewhere around June 7th: Changed to advertise the London series, I remember at the time I thought it was weird since they changed it to it one or two days before the series started
After the London series I can't remember exactly what it was, but I could swear it was not either the Gay logo or the default logo
June 16th: Changed for Father days/Prostate Cancer Awareness day
Present day as of this post: Changed to advertise the Negro league styled game at Rickwood field

TLDR : My Tin foil conspiracy theory is I think they are actively trying to find any reason at all to not go back to either the gay logo (which would piss of most sport watchers) or the default logo (which would piss off the gays)

Obviously it could be one giant coincidence and I'm being a schitzo, but my funny head canon is someone told an intern to find literally anything they could use as a scape goat to not have to make the choice, hence way unimportant/forgettable things like the prospect game thing was used, of the London series being used kind of early, in my opinion. We can see how they end the month off.
 
Something kind of strange is going on in the NL standings. 9 teams have practically the same record. It's doubtful this would keep happening the whole season but if it ended today we would have a team with a losing record have a chance at the world series. That shouldn't happen. It's probably caused by all the interleague play which was expanded last year. This year there are more winning record teams in the AL.

I like the interleague play expansion, personally, but the matchups only seem to be good on paper. Without anything at stake like the World Series or advancement in the postseason, what are the guys really playing for? To not lose? While that is the point of sports, it doesn't necessarily make for an exciting game. I think interleague games should be a 2 week thing at the beginning of the season. One week is AL at NL and one week is NL at AL. You don't face the same opponents twice so fans get a good variety of matchups. You also don't have to worry about potentially going up against a strong team that isn't divisional that could wreck your season if you lose a series.

As far the standings in the NL go, I can't say I'm too surprised. Phillies and Dodgers were always going to be the top in their divisions, but the Central is just a steaming pile of shit. The Brewers being the first place team isn't even that exciting when their record is just barely better than St. Louis. I think the biggest surprise is the regression we've seen from the Diamondbacks, but they also regressed after their last WS appearance in 2001. Out of all these middle of the pack teams, I think Washington is a potential dark horse that many aren't talking about.

I was fine with the system they used to have, where they rotated which interleague divisions played each other every year. It made interleague play rare enough to be a special occasion.

The exception to that, of course, is interleague rivalries like the Royals and Cardinals, or cross-town Subway Series. Those should be perennial.

On an unrelated note, am I alone in thinking WAR is the prime specimen of vague, arbitrary, who-gives-a-shit stat dorkery? I honestly think it only exists to give perpetual blowjobs to Trout and Harper.

There was nothing wrong with the old system, and the unbalanced schedule was one of the things that made baseball special. But we just have to ram the Yankees and Red Sox down everyone's throats even more than they already are, so the old system had to go. Because they're struggling small-market teams that need more exposure, you see.

Orelvis Martinez Receives 80-Game Suspension Following Positive PED Test​

The MLB commissioner’s office announced this morning that Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Clomiphene, a banned performance enhancing substance. The suspension is effective immediately. Martinez has since been placed on the restricted list, and the Blue Jays have selected the contract of outfielder Steward Berroa to replace the infielder on the active and 40-man rosters.
“The Blue Jays fully support Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, and strongly believe in keeping the game on a level playing field,” Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins said in a statement this morning. “We were both surprised and disappointed to hear of Orelvis Martinez’s suspension. We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis has learned from this mistake. Orelvis has our support, and we know he will get through this.”
Martinez released a statement of his own via the MLB Players Association:
“For the past two years, I have been trying to start a family with my girlfriend. During the offseason, we visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic and after getting lab work done, we were prescribed a treatment, which included a medication called Rejun 50. Unfortunately, Rejun 50 contains a banned substance called Clomiphene.
We wanted to keep this matter private, even within our family, and trusted the doctor who assured us this treatment did not include performance enhancing drugs. Therefore, I made the mistake of not disclosing this to my team or the MLBPA. With that said, I took full responsibility for my actions and accepted my suspension.
I want to apologize to my teammates in both Buffalo and Toronto, the Blue Jays organization, and most importantly, the fans who have supported me during my career. I will learn from this experience and come back to the field in September.”
The news is a major blow to the Blue Jays, who recalled Martinez for his big league debut just this past week to join the club’s infield mix after shortstop Bo Bichette hit the injured list with a calf strain. Martinez has just one game under his belt in the majors so far, having gone 1-for-3 with a strikeout while playing second base in his big league debut on Friday. While Martinez’s big league career had only just begun, he’s long been considered a consensus top-100 prospect in the sport and was in the midst of an excellent showing at Triple-A this year when he received the call to the majors. In 63 games for the club’s Buffalo affiliate this year, Martinez slashed .260/.343/.523 while playing both second and third base.
Now, Martinez’s big league career is on hold just days after it first began. The earliest he’ll be able to return to play in the big leagues is September 23 against the Red Sox, although given the fact that Martinez would be ineligible to participate in the postseason due to his suspension and that date landing just six games before the end of the regular season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Martinez did not end up returning to the majors until the 2025 campaign.

It's actually impressive how they built a team that went to three straight NLCS, broke the curse, was run like an actual competitive team and somehow changed nothing. It happened and once it ended they returned to the exact same losers they've been my entire life.
 
Shohei Ohtani now has 10 straight games with an RBI, which breaks a record that has stood for 100 years.

The all time record is 17 straight RBI games and I don't think that he can get there, but who knows ?

What makes it especially impressive is that he's doing this as a lead-off hitter and that the bottom of the batting order for the Dodgers has been some straight up turd sandwich tier horrible.

So he basically has to hit homers most of the time...which he's been doing, so more power to him.

I really hope that he doesn't enter the Home Run Derby. That shit seems to really fuck with batters' swings and production post-All Star Break.
