I know that we've beaten this horse to death to the point where its ready to be animated into an undead horror, but I am going to make one final observation about the Juan Soto contract, having really taken some time to pore over the details.

The "official" figure for the contract, including the signing bonus and the current projected payments equates to $765 million over 15 years.

We understand also that he has an opt-out clause after 5 years which if the Mets want to void, they need to increase the annual salary for the last 10 years by $4 million, which will tack on $40 million when the dust settles. Let's talk about this point first.

Now, the language here is somewhat obtuse. It's clear that the Mets will have to pay the extra amount if they want to void the opt-out...however, what happens in a scenario where Soto decides against opting out and wants to stay a Met ? Do the Mets still have to pay that extra money ? Given how much of a lolcow Cohen has shown himself to be with this laughable contract, we're going to go ahead and assume that yes, it still kicks in.

It's important to establish this because I am of the opinion that even if Soto does hit the market in 5 years, there is little guarantee that someone would want to offer him a contract that would exceed what he is currently promised. Think about what it would take for something like that to happen for a moment. The Mets would have to win 2-3 World Series and Soto would have to pull prime/healthy Mike Trout numbers as the centerpiece of such a run of championships.

That will never happen and I absolutely guarantee it. The NL is a murderer's row and the Mets aren't winning shit during that time. Soto has a chance at matching prime Trout's prowess with the bat but baserunning ? Fielding ? Hell fucking no. Soto is absolutely set to fail against the expectations that come with such a contract no matter how you break it down.

So we're going to go with the scenario that Soto stays and that the Mets have to pony up that extra $40 million to bring the value up to $805 million over 15 years.

Oh but we're not done yet. In fact, the fun part is just beginning. Let's take a look at the perks which Soto has lined up in his contract:

Soto will receive a suite at the Mets stadium for the duration of the contract. I've read that the valuation for such a suite is $500 K per year, which would add $7.5 million to the cost.

He'll receive travel accommodations for his family, a hotel suite during away games and up to 4 premium home plate tickets at Citi Field for regular season and playoff games. I won't bore you with the finer details, but over 15 years I estimate $3.5 million (premium tickets) and $15 million (hotel suite for away games and full travel accommodations for up to 4 family members).

Then you have the full security detail that he and his family will receive for all spring training, regular season and playoff games both at home and away. This one is tricky but let's assume 5 security guards (Soto + 4 family members). It's a full time detail that will be traveling to all of the games across the country with all expenses being charged to the Mets. I would not at all be surprised if the fully loaded cost comes out to $1 million per year for the contingent. Over 15 years, this adds yet another $15 million.

With these perks, that now brings the total cost to the Mets to $846 million.

Surely that must be it right ? No, frens....I told you that this shit was lolcow tier right ? So now let's move on to additional bonuses that he could earn via distinctions:

  • MVP: $500,000 for the first, and $1 million for each subsequent win. He also gets $350,000 for finishing second in the voting, and $150,000 if he comes in third.
  • All-Star: $100,000 for each All-Star selection.
  • Gold Glove: $100,000.
  • World Series MVP: $350,000.
  • LCS MVP: $150,000.
  • All-MLB First/Second Team: $100,000.
  • Silver Slugger Award: $150,000.
  • Hank Aaron Award: $100,000.
I'm not going to bore you with further details but with even relatively meagre production, he's a lock to win 10-12 All-Star selections, quite a few MLB 1st/2nd Teams, a bunch of Silver Sluggers and I'll thrown in him being perennially in the MVP voting. You can make the case that this could net him another $4 million or so.

All things considered, the final tab for the Mets comes to around $850 million over 15 years, at nearly $57 million per year.

Did I say that this was lolcow tier ? I'm sorry, but this is inner circle hall of shame level lolcow tier. Move over Ralph, Chris Chan, Rikieta and Keffals...make way for Steve Cohen who actually thought that this would be an awesome deal.

One last point:

Randy Miller, a beat writer who follows the Yankees alleges that he has first hand knowledge that Soto's number changing was a load of horse shit. He claims that he's seen text messages from Soto after the contract signing and the number was the same as the one for Soto that Miller has.

Again, such a statement could be considered slanderous so for Miller to come out and claim as such means that he likely has proof. If true, then it makes it look shady as fuck that he wouldn't be in contact with any of the other Yankees after the World Series.

Miller also alleged that the Padres were glad to see Soto leave and that there's a reason as to why they got better after he left.

Soto's a mercenary nigger who plays for himself and is motivated by money more than anything. He isn't going to be the difference maker and force multiplier that pushes teams over the top. There's a reason why the Mets are his 4th team at age 26.

Lowe was my favorite player too so I'm pissed. I like Jake Burger don't get me wrong, but the Rangers line up is chock full of players that constantly oscilate from great to terrible throught the season, and Lowe was probably the player that was the most consistently mid, other than Seager who is consistently good. I think were going to miss his consistent OBP and all of our players are going to be swinging for the fences.

A cool 21 million is a 250% odd raise against the 8 million that he made last year. The Dodgers probably offered him a slight raise in exchange for a few extra years but 21 million is amazing.

Happy for him and his family. Buehler probably doesn’t mind these “prove it” style deals in exchange for a great payday on an annualized basis. Richly deserved.

Nick Fuentes was e-begging after his assassin home visit and Twitter space detailing all the visitors he's had since Nov 5th.

Granted the source is Nick Fuentes, but he claims the cost of having a presumably armed single security guard be a sentry for his home 24/7 in Chicago was 13k/week or 676k annually.

Soto's detail probably isn't 24 hours, but is also surely greater than a single mall cop.

So a million a year in private security costs for Soto alone could certainly be an underestimate.

If we were trying to rid ourselves of money, we should have gotten rid of Jonah Heim first. Or Garcia. I know Adolis "Sixhead" Garcia will always be a DFW legend, but I think he was a one season wonder. He's still good enough to fleece some team in a trade deal.

Going from Lowe to Jake Burger is a pretty big downgrade, not even considering that all the money we saved on trading Lowe, we immediately turned around and burnt on Joc Pederson. I hope by some miracle the Rangers end up signing Roki Sasaki so we don't have to put Jack Leiter in the rotation.

I think that you're right. If we really want to go with the Floyd Mayweather style man mountain posse then we're talking multiple millions per year to their agency. It just stretches out the absolute hilarity that is this contract.

Just when the Mets were seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with the Bobby Bonilla shit, they're now saddled with this.

You can always count on the Lol Mets to do Lol Mets things. As a Phillies fan, I am forever grateful for this.
 
My Guards trading Gimenez made sense, but trading Josh "GIMMIE THE SMOKE" Naylor hurts. However, I can't say I'm all too surprised. His production at the plate hadn't gotten away from his average, but the amount of strikeouts went up and his OBP and OPS took a major hit. Great hitter, but too one dimensional and loves to swing for the fence too often. He massively ballooned in weight as well, which was somewhat concerning. Josh was always a big boy (especially in comparison to his brother Bo), but he started getting a case of Dunlopp's disease with that belly of his after the all star break. I think Arizona will be a good fit for him and I'll always be a J. Naylor fan.

As loathe as I am to give the Yankees credit, kudos to them for standing firm on the luxury suite being paid for by Soto and basically telling him you're not above the team and no one else has ever done this, including players for more successful here than you.

That being said after years of being hamstrung by Fred and Jeff Wilpon, I am not really upset the team has an owner now who actually competes and puts his own money into the team. Even Citi Field gets upgrades in the offseason be they overt or subtle.

Despite my hesitancy to have Manfred fuck with tradition even more, I'm probably down for the "you lose your DH when you pull your starting pitcher" proposals.

No one wants to see starters pulled after 4 innings because of nebulous reasons like pitch inefficiency.

You'd probably have to build in some injury contingency exceptions (DH remains for the long man but SP has to go on IL?).

Probably should coincide with stricter caps on how many relievers teams are allowed on the 26-man roster because most teams are still running too short a bench to be able to save enough pinch hitters to survive regulation let alone Manfred ball.

Anything to get rid of the stupidity where a SP who's pitching well gets pulled after 4 innings because the computer says ackchyually you should put in a middle reliever with a 4.5 ERA when the lineup turns around for the third time. Analytics are just plain cancer for baseball. They're already bad for other sports, but since baseball is a game of discrete outcomes, the computer can spit out probability numbers for any decision. Modern coaches think they're so many levels above those of previous decades just because they can look at an IPad and make the decision with the higher percentage next to it, actual momentum and player emotions be damned.

It has also eroded public trust in how much the front office and analytics nerd types meddle with coaching decisions on the field.

Modern coaches look like cucks if they have prescripted game plans from on high that they expected to follow no matter the game situation (much like the modern trend of lifting starters who are currently pitching a no-hitter just because they are approaching some astroturfed pitch count).

There were a couple of situations in recent Blue Jays (awful) modern playoff history where Robert Ray and Jose Berrios were pulled early during wild card games with the score very close only to have the pen absolutely melt down afterwards.

Managers like John Schneider all but said that the decree to pull Jose Berrios came directly from the FO. The FO proceeded to act like the soulless corpos they are, throwing their underling under the bus later on saying it was "John's decision alone" even though they could've been the bigger man and admitted it was a "team" decision.

I honestly think that's what elevated Dave Roberts this year he stopped relying too much on analytics and started relying on what the players were feeling.
