I’ve started playing mechwarrior online. What are some good mechs to buy first? I’ve used mystarting c-bills to buy a summoner-c, a warhammer, and an awesome-8q.

Avoid the Awesome for now. 6R is a good Warhammer. I recommend one in each weight class - I'm biased towards IS.

My choices would be a Commando-2D, Urbanmech-R60L, Wolfhound-2 or Flea-17 in Light, Assassin-21, Shadowhawk-2K, Phoenix Hawk-1B, Bushwacker-X1, or Crab-27B in Medium, Marauder-5M, Warhammer-6R, Thunderbolt-10SE or Dragon-5N in Heavy, and Battlemaster-1G, Charger-1A5, Banshee-3M, Cyclops-10Q and Annihilator-2A in Assault.

Any particular reason to avoid the awesome, beyond it being slow?

It's got terrible hitboxes and poor mount locations. It has a tendency to get singled out and/or left behind in a NASCAR. I could see it working okay if you could count on your team not to throw you away. Run Quad PPC with some lasers, maybe.
 
Honestly Assaults that can't really boogie can be rough to play right now, which is most of them. It will really depend on your ability to anticipate team movement and keep up via map shortcuts.
 
So, I patiently waited for the rest of Wave 2 being available here for months. I didn't want to wait any longer, so I ordered the rest of what was available on Sunday.
Today the entire rest (including the Urbie Salvage Box) became available...

Oh well, guess that's another 90 Euros not going into my heating bill.

9Q is actually decently fast and is a capable sniper mech.

Also just avoid Clanner mechs in general, weapons are too god damn terrible to fully utilize and just fucking BLEH. Just not worth it.

What recommendations would you give? Managed to grind out a battlemaster and am liking it, though it seems to run really hot.

Yeah your gonna also have to spec it out to make it so it reduces heat faster and have a bigger heat threshold which requires more grinding. Also don't forget to login to your MWO account here https://mwomercs.com/tournaments?t=202207beach and redeem your prizes. You can get a shit ton of c-bills and other premium shit as well, plus when the next event kicks you can even earn your choice of a premium hero mech.

Also if you want a solid mech. A good zombie mech is legit the way to go. Find a mech with pretty much only energy weapons and no XL or Light Fusion engines.

If you really want to zombie (zombie as meta has fallen by the wayside a bit, average alphas are through the roof) the Roughneck with 2 CT energy and 1 HD energy is what you want. Throw a big AC in the RT or an HGauss.

I’m pretty sure that that’s what I want to do with my medium, and I’m wondering about the shadow hawk, pheonix hawk, or a Griffin 2n. All of those are pretty classic mechs too based on what I’ve seen. I picked up the Awesome mostly because I like Tex’s videos.

If your talking about the Beach Party one well I'm also kinda stuck because I'm also halfway there and I have no idea what the fuck I'm getting. I'm thinking of maybe getting the most expensive one since I already got the Blackwidow.

I also apparently got a mad dog from this, or something else. Not sure what to do with all the srms. I haven’t liked those so far.

PPCs definitely, better velocity makes poptarting accurately a bit easier.
