Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

Clergymen aren't supposed to spill blood so when they go to war they bring maces. Think of the battlepope's HAG 40 and improved Heavy Gauss as bludgeoning implements.
There wouldn't be any blood being spilled anyway. At most you'd see a faint flash of pink mist among the hypervelocity impacts.

We might need to convene a synod on the direct sublimation of blood to a gaseous state and if that does or does not violate the decrees against the shedding of blood.
He's the Pope of the Church of New Avalon. I'm sure they'll just open an exception to Kuritan blood.

Yeah, this got mentioned in the Warrior Trilogy, not sure if the sourcebooks cover it. During Amaris's reign, his goons took over the Vatican, but before that the Pope sent out communiques to all the major bishops. But the message to New Avalon got garbled, and that guy wound up thinking he'd been handed control of the whole Catholic church. Whoops.

So there was a schism of sorts, because New Avalon Catholicism is a little different (it allows priests to marry, for example). The traditional Catholics and NA-Catholics generally get along, but reunification is taking time.

I believe they also let women into the priesthood proper. Not sure. Also, the message was garbled, but, to quote Sarna:
When Stefan Amaris' soldiers first secured control of Terra in 2770 and laid siege to the Vatican, Catholic Pope Clement XXVII dispatched a message to the five cardinals who oversaw the Church in the Star League's other Member-States. Correctly anticipating his death at the hands of the Greenhaven Gestapo, Clement stepped down from his position and granted the cardinals the temporary power necessary to run the church in their respective domains.

Clement intended for the College of Cardinals to elect his successor once the opportunity arose, but New Avalon's Cardinal Kinsey de Medici received a garbled message which he interpreted to mean that Clement had placed him in charge of the Church. Later, upon learning of the massacre of Clement and nearly everybody else in the Vatican, de Medici moved swiftly to assume control of the Church. Despite being informed of Clement's actual message, he appointed a new College of Cardinals who confirmed his election as Pope Thomas X, following which the new pontiff announced his authority over all Catholics in known space.

Cardinals and other Church leaders in the other states refused to recognize Thomas X's authority, prompting him to excommunicate them all. While the war against Amaris raged this split was more symbolic than practical, but following Terra's liberation in 2779 the College of Cardinals convened once more and elected John Paul V as Clement's successor. Thomas X's refusal to submit to him or step down prompted the official break between the Roman and New Avalon Catholic Churches.

Despite this split the Vatican didn't dispute the apostolic succession of the New Avalon Catholic Church, allowing them to continue to perform valid Sacraments.
Catholics gonna Catholic Schism Antipope.

Needless to say House Davion basically treats the NACC as a sort of BattleTech-era Anglican church, complete with nationalism and all that, including telling the Avalonian Papacy to shove it when they get in their way.

This is one of these things I love about BattleTech. Sure, the schism between the Catholic Church and the New Avalon Catholic Church has no bearing on the stompy robots (Davion BattlePope aside), but that sort of detail adds such a nice bit of color and body to the setting. Particularly in sci-fi settings religions tend to be used simply as a soapbox for the author instead of just a fact of life for most people. And even way out in space, humans still hold on to (or create their own) traditions.

What are Atlases doing in a Lyran assault company? Do the Steiners issue integral scout lances to them or something?

Also @Corn Flakes BattlePope totally needs to be a game. Such a shame the Lord's Light 2 ERPPC is a Combine-made weapon, though...

Either that or they had some left over after fully outfitting the scout companies. You know how it goes: always make a few more than you think you'll need.

it's a comic, does that count?

I can't give you a game, sorry.

What I can do, however, is give an artist I know a couple bucks so we can have this:
popemobile.png

Needs clerical vestments but it’s a good start
I asked the artist for a papal stole but he couldn't make it work without covering the chest lasers so I told him to drop it.

You don't want your fancy embroidered 'Mech-sized stripe of silk to have huge smoking holes in it as soon as you open fire.

I love it. Also it can use the left hand to hold on to one of those frankincense smoke-dispenser thingies... or use a giant steel cross to beat the non-believers from Capella.
Shit. I forgot to ask him for a thurible. Let me see if he'll add one.

Needs to be escorted by Black Knights or Templars painted like the Swiss Guard, and a trio of Atlas’ painted red to represent the college of cardinals.
