Yeah, I have a buddy who I play Battletech with on a weekly basis and his big complaint about it, even though he has fun with it, is that it's not a competitive game.

And I'm like, you can make it competitive you'd just have to metagame the shit out of it
The competitive format was started by 40K players since they were disillusioned with GW. I can get on board with the idea that you’re limited to just one unit having a skill of 2, but I don’t want to have to scour IWM’s catalog for a mini because you’re only allowed to use CGL and IWM and there’s no miniature agnosticism. I didn’t even care for competitive 40K 10th edition and I was playing sororitas then.
While I like AS, I like the crunchy side of classic and getting that headshot as a person is saying "So long as you don't hit my head I'll survive"
I had a mechwarrior that was 2/3 but piloted a hunchback IIC for the love of the game. I made up a backstory that he did it because it was handed down to him. Played like a retard with him but had a lot of fun despite him getting demolished 9 times out of 10.

My biggest problem with Classic Battletech is that I suck at wargaming and I have to use lame things like strategy, tactics, overlapping fields of fire and cover so my mech's don't cored by a bunch of dirty clanner test tube incest babies before I can get close enough to them to hurt them lmao.

Quoth the Raven, "Arrow IV".

The key number in classic Battletech is seven. Because that's the most common number you can roll with two six sided dice.

You want to push your to hit number down to seven if at all possible, after modifiers. This may not always be feasible, but it's what you need to be aiming for.

The hardest thing for me to learn about Classic if your meta gaming it is that I need to have a few mechs that I don't mind activating first. Like the Atlas ideally wants to be one of the last mechs you activate because it benefits a lot from seeing where someone is going to go, so having a mech that doesn't give a shit when it activates helps it a lot. The Awesome is apparently really good at that, park it somewhere it can keep shooting at something and just tap it to not move every turn.

Understanding gator goes a long way with this. I used to hate it because I wanted to be able to move as much or build up heat from using weapons but didn’t like that it’d be used against me and I’d have to roll 10+ just to shoot a mech like a commando or locust that I knew I could one-shot.

You always want to send out mechs you don’t mind using as shock troops and holding on to those that if you’d lose in a single turn would be a wash in BV investment. I learned that the hard way one game playing the undead lance set and sending the exhumer out first as opposed to the cadaver. The opponent zipped right to me with a fire moth carrying elementals right up its ass crack. The cadaver is like a dark age firestarter and could’ve handled it or be destroyed and I wouldn’t have been left with my pants down.

if you want a easy initiative sink get some cheap battle armor or vehicles. and if your playing scenarios or missions (the better way to play) they help a lot with tasks you don't want your mech to do
