No, seriously.

Being a fake geek, fake goth etc is no different than the "cultural appropriation" that SJWs like to bitch about. You infiltrate a culture that you're not a part of and have no legitimate desire to become a part of, and you change it to fit your own needs while identifying as the very culture you seek to change and destroy. Goth culture died this way, as we all know gaming and geek culture died this way too. Why has no one else made this argument online?

Gaming culture died? Well fuck, guess that means I can't go to Origins or GenCon, anymore, because boardgames and tabletop have become more mainstream. Or maybe, it's nice to see twenty thousand dorks all in one place at a time. I guess it depends on your point of view. Cultures are not unchanging. People complain constantly about how "this isn't like the old Farms." And, they're right. But also, who fucking cares? Tying up your entire personality in a culture is stupid.

Who gives a fuck about cringe goth/punk shit or whatever, only retarded teenagers care about projecting some kind of image. But the SJWs actually did literally ruin gaming, like they had an observable effect on the hobby.

You can still paint your nails black like a retard, I can't buy a game without vetting it for LGBT propaganda.

Paging @Syaoran Li. Your attention has been humbly requested.

No, Ozzy Osbourne is NOT GOTH! NONE OF YOU PEOPLE KNOW WHAT GOTH IS!

Amen. I like Ozzy Osbourne a lot, but he's not anything close to goth rock.

Couldn't you argue it became such an insular circle jerk the rest of humanity just started pointing and laughing, when they noticed it at all?

I mean, I can't argue with that. There's a reason why I quit the whole goth scene years ago.

But as for OP's statement, I'm of the opinion "Who gives a shit?"

Consumerism is not culture
You're about 16 years too late to bitch about the normies ruining everything.
There are some younger generations attempting to resuscitate the subculture, although yes, the average age for any Goth show ranges from 45-60.

This meme is quite apropos given the current landscape with social media. I have to wonder if the presence of social media snowflakes cause existential dread for the older generations of Goths. I went to Clan of Xymox earlier this year and saw two girls no older than 24 both dressed to the nines in Goth gear on the dancefloor at the show. The two spent the entire night chatting with each other and updating their Instas. I know Goths aren't known to be social butterflies, but sheesh, what the fuck were they at the show for? Break the ice for once, people!

I agree, because I’ve met people irl who I thought at first were into <niche hobby I like>, but upon asking more about their interest in it, they’re really just collectors, or just like the “aesthetic” of the hobby.

They don’t engage with it on more than a surface level and I’m left disappointed.
