Empires in the conventional or abstract sense are allowed in the discussion as well as any polity or state that called itself an empire.

The Mongol Empire, biggest contiguous land empire and they knew to not to touch India. Their sheer dominance has never been outmatched

The Roman empire is unrivaled and continue to be unrivaled.

The Brits came close, but their empire ruled over cavemen tier tribals and barely lasted a few 100 years.
Modern day America similairly comes close but won't even surpass the Brits at their height.

At least with Alexander you can make the case that the various successor empires his generals established after his death Hellenized the Ancient World and fundamentally changed it. The Mongols were so hands-off pretty much every successor state the empire's breakup created was more likely to just morph into the peoples they conquered, but with better cavalry this time.
