Disaster Bitchute: Platforming Hate and Terror in the UK

Bitchute exists to circumvent the moderation of mainstream platforms, and is an increasingly important hub for terrorist propaganda, incitement to racist violence and COVID-19 misinformation.

Over recent months HOPE not hate has watched with increasing alarm as violent, racist and harmful videos are posted on social media platforms using the video-sharing platform BitChute as their host – circumventing the ban that most major platforms have placed on the sharing of this content.
Bitchute is a UK-based video-sharing platform – founded by tech entrepreneur Ray Vahey in 2017 – whose stated purpose was to offer a platform for content that had been banned from other sites.
Vahey said that his idea for the site came from:
“seeing the increased levels of censorship by the large social media platforms in the last couple of years. Bannings, demonetization, and tweaking algorithms to send certain content into obscurity and wanting to do something about it.”
With this as a core mission, it comes as little surprise that the site has attracted a vast array of vile – and often illegal – content.
This report shows:
  1. That absence of moderation and willingness to host hateful content is the unique selling point of the platform
  2. That the platform is dominated by content and producers that have been, or would be, removed from other platforms
  3. That BitChute is knowingly playing host to terrorist propaganda and incitement to violence. Our research has identified 114 videos in support of proscribed terrorist groups on BitChute, including 23 videos in support of National Action and 86 videos promoting the Islamic State group
  4. That BitChute actively promotes conspiracy theories and misinformation
This cannot be allowed to go on. Change is needed:
  • Major social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter should ban the sharing of Bitchute links on their platform, thereby significantly reducing the impact of this extreme and dangerous material.
  • Law enforcement investigate Bitchute for distribution of content that breaks British law, including terrorism legislation.
  • The Government should introduce an Online Harms Bill that includes meaningful consequences for bespoke platforms such as Bitchute that host, promote or distribute terrorism, extremist and hateful content
BitChute’s behaviour is a particular challenge for social media platforms where BitChute content is shared. As a result of our research Facebook have deleted swathes of links to BitChute posted on their own platform. Erin Saltman, EMEA Head of Counterterrorism and Dangerous Organisations Policy for Facebook told us, “Hate speech, violent extremist groups and dangerous organisations have no place on our platforms and we are grateful to HOPE Not Hate for sharing their research around new methods used to promote this content online. We have taken firm action based on the findings of this report to ensure that hate-based organisations are not our platform, removing and blocking the vast majority of content shared with us. We will continue to work with partners and experts to stay ahead of those seeking to spread hate and violent extremist content.” This is a welcome move. But more is needed to reduce the harm done by BitChute’s behaviour.
We’ll be pressing for social media companies, the police, and the Government to take action.

Response to 'HOPE not hate' report on BitChute

On Friday the 17th July we were contacted by a journalist who made us aware of an upcoming report by the activist organization 'HOPE not hate'. The journalist was under embargo by 'HOPE not hate' and unauthorized to share the report with us. Therefore, we reached out directly to 'HOPE not hate' requesting a copy of the report, and more specifically the list of terrorist content they had found, so that we can take the appropriate measures to enforce our guidelines.

In the time since, several other journalists have contacted us citing the same report and we have given them the following statement, excerpts of which were quoted in the article by The Independent:

"BitChute is a startup that's growing incredibly fast in a market that has been monopolized by YouTube. There are millions of videos on BitChute and thousands of videos are uploaded daily. We have removed thousands that violate our terms of use, but we are improving our moderation systems and we know we need to do more. We are working hard to introduce new policies and processes which will further improve our ability to remove illegal content and we are already engaging with a number of organizations to scale up our capabilities. As a small platform, we have limited resources and encourage organizations like Hope Not Hate to help us improve our processes and enter into a direct dialogue with us. Studies have shown that banning people from online platforms pushes them on to other networks based in remote jurisdictions where there is no accountability, no oversight, and no possibility for improvement and where people may be propagandized by groups that do have extreme agendas. No one should want that, we do not want that and BitChute can play a major role in preventing that from happening."

Yesterday the report was released by 'HOPE not hate' and its contents were damning, although the conclusions of the report are far from the truth of the situation. BitChute is and always has been a neutral platform. We are committed to eliminating terrorist and violent extremist content from our services.

We have already been taking steps to address the gap between the intent of our guidelines and our ability to enforce them. This began with establishing a dedicated moderation team at the start of the year, which we plan to grow, and is continuing with work on refining our guidelines to improve clarity, coverage and alignment with public expectations. We are also looking to make significant improvements to the technological aspects with a redesign of our moderation system to improve its capability, efficiency and transparency. And we have been seeking outside assistance with gaining access to automated detection technogies, like those deployed by our much larger competitors.

Since we launched three years ago we have made many thousands of social media posts covering a diverse array of topics and opinions from a wide range of users, we never thought of these as endorsements of either the creators, their content or their views and were intended to stimulate debate. Moving forward we have decided to make changes to how we utilise social media, for now usage will be limited to posting company announcements and we will conduct an internal review to identify any others that are an appropriate use of our influence.

Like cancer, if you let them fester, they will just grow. Chopping them off at the knees is the only way to stop it. Just ask your boy Null about making your own website. It's not good enough that you don't go to their websites, they want to shut down anyone who doesn't suck tranny cock like them. If you don't want KF to be SA in a few years, make sure you tell these faggots always complaining about A&N to shut the fuck up. They have so little self-control that they can't avoid clicking a link. "Close your eyes nigga"

I tried explaining this about a year ago, too. You're correct, but explaining "the SomethingAwful Effect" to Kiwis seems to be a waste of time.

You.. FUCKING... CUCKS!!!

You literally had ONE job, and you instead bowed down to appease the fucks that were leaning on you. You could have thrown it back in their faces and said exactly what @Troonos said, but no... you cave in and even use their language to defend your platform.

Now because of this, they aren't going to back down and they are not going to leave you alone. If you don't do exactly what they want, they WILL eliminate you, because NOTHING is good enough to these people. Inb4 "they would have been threatened to be taken down anyway" the point is, Bitchute showed weakness, and now the enemy smells the fear and blood. They could have went down with dignity instead of this.

No no no no no, fuck off with this semantic buggery. Moderation is editorial decisions about community content, ostensibly in the interests of a community. Removing published media from a site with no community in the interest of third parties is just censorship.

It was only a matter of time, considering the cucked nature of how the British government can be at times.

Not even that. They're the British equivalent of the ADL or SPLC (With more foetal alcohol occult symbolism).
Not even the most inconcequential of sanctions would have occurred had they ignored this but it's not like they even actually use bittorrent technology despite lying about it so what's new? These guys were jokers from the start.

ISIS/ISIL is recruiting on Twitter. Twitter is platforming hate and terror.

Antifa groups are all over Facebook. Facebook is platforming hate and terror.

But those are good types of hate! REEEE!!!

This began with establishing a dedicated moderation team at the start of the year

It's been fun boys, another "free speech" website to through into the pile.

And we have been seeking outside assistance with gaining access to automated detection technogies, like those deployed by our much larger competitors

Google is the way! Despite being the reason the platforms was created in the first place. Any response from bitchute that isn't 'fuck you' is proof that the platform will no longer exist as it currently has for the forseeable future. If you plan to be a free speech platform you can't capitulate when they inevitably come for you and yours. The fact that this platform is hosted in one of the most pozzed countries in existence was probably a bad sign from the start.

Why the fuck someone thought that the UK was seemingly a good place to startup an 'alternative content platform' IDK, and I can't believe that they've apologised and bent the knee to these slimy fucks, as that's it now - they're done.

It's almost as if no-one at this internet company has been paying any attention to what the fuck's been going on online, and how apologising and acknowledging these fucks is the *last* thing that they want to do. :stress:

I've always wondered this, Bitchute being owned and operated by Bongs is a terrible idea, it's only a matter of time until they get shut down... they'll most likely bleed out financially first tho.

Are they seriously based in the UK? Even if the founders are bongs, it only takes a few hundred bucks to incorporate in Delaware as a foreign national and gain access to all the advantages of being a US company.

Even if they didn't think to do it initially, it probably wouldn't be that hard to either restructure or sell the assets to a new US entity (as I'm assuming they're bleeding money and have minimal assets).
