Fucking pricing is a bit savage and the day one DLC is putting me off. But it looks so fucking good, now i just have to wait for the fitgirl repack.

Sega is going to be mad when this does well.

I'm not one to shame piracy but this is a fully independent game that took the devs over four years of work... no disrespect if you're poor, but if you've got the money to spend, put it where it counts. fund based games. this one is hella worth it

I don't doubt it's a good game, but it is an Indie game and its just a little too expensive for me to justify. If it's good after i download it i'll probably buy it on a steam sale, but i can't support day one dlc, if it was just the soundtrack i'd be more willing to accept it. But purposely cutting out characters from a day one release on a single player game is fucking scummy.

Indie devs make their games at least 5$ more expensive on purpose. If a game is worth 10$ they mark it up 15$ to justify steam sales.

seriously though, was super looking forward to this but I absolutely refuse to support scummy practices like that :(
hopefully the fans enjoy it though that crowd has been unjustly starved of peak y2k bodaciousness for far too long

I'm mainly impressed this game released as a finished product without being a bug-ridden mess on day one. Disasters like Security Breach had me convinced that even indie games weren't safe from rush jobs anymore.

While I can respect the amount of work and passion behind this, there's a fine line between being inspired by something and down right plagiarizing it. I watched the trailer and was kinda shocked by the things lifted wholesale from JSR and JSR Future.

it's definitely not plaigarism. certain things are obvious callbacks, like certain specific areas of certain zones are callbacks to JSRF. the Dogenzaka Hill avenue grind and Shibuya Terminal bus stop layouts, for example, are sort of present but not in a copy/paste kind of way, and they're part of a much larger level that very much does its own thing. it's more of a "hey this reminds me of X" feel, that you probably won't catch unless you've replayed JSR and JSRF about fifteen billion times like me

I'm still waiting on the "full" verdict once people have got a chance to fully play it. I really hope that it's good though.

I'm more than happy to pay a premium for indie games that are actually good. I don't buy many new titles a year (retro gamer) and I'm perfectly fine supporting the ones that I care about.
I remember thinking that Cruelty Squad (PLEASE UPDATE THE SOUNDTRACK CSP!) was a bit steep when I purchased it but it ended up being one of my favorite games of all time and I wish I could've somehow paid more for it.
The day 1 DLC *is* pretty worrying though. My exact thoughts when I first saw it.

I'm fine with works ripping off others if it's done "respectfully". That's a pretty vague rule but it's a pretty vague area.
This game was released almost 20 years after the game it's ripping off and it's not trying to hide it's inspirations. I don't see anything cynical here.

the day 1 DLC is a true head supporter pack that adds two characters from their previous game. it does not:
  • change the game in any way (all characters are mechanically interchangeable)
  • represent significant content cut from the game (it's two skins)
  • represent greed on the part of the developers (they funded this game in part by releasing skins for Lethal League, the extra money is going back into development)
  • penalize the player for not buying it (both characters are cameos and don't appear in the game otherwise, you're not buying something that should have been free)
  • cost an exorbitant amount of money (it's $5)
if you're skeeved then just buy the base game by itself. you're literally not missing out on anything. if you want the soundtrack, buy that too; there's no discount for buying the deluxe bundle.

that's cool and all but I don't care
Cutting content to sell separately on day 1 is enough to make me say no and the fact that it's 5 bucks and arguably cosmetic does not make a difference
Nor does the fact that this is an indie game (especially since it's charging the same amount as a AA)
It sucks that I kinda don't want to buy it anymore, but there's always JSR/F if I want more Jet Set Radio

Regardless of it being purely cosmetic no where does it say any of the above in the steam page. For me it's a principle thing, if i just accept well its just cosmetic and i chuck another $5 here and $10 where does it end?. Look at the state of micro transactions/battle passes/e shops and any other form of pay piggery. If people keep accepting the dick further into the mouth it'll get to a point where you'll never get a complete game. The soundtrack I'm perfectly fine with being a "DLC" there was effort and time put in, the composer needs to be paid and so do the devs. But the artwork is already in the files, it might not affect game play but it feels dirty. Not to mention the fact there's no regional pricing so while it might $40 for Americans, if i bought it now with the DLC it'd be $80. I'm not a poor cunt but that's a bill or petrol for me something tangible.

It's a contentious issue you're okay with the DLC and that's fine i am not and choose not to paypig for "just cosmetic" in this instance.

Fitgirl's repacked it anyway so I'll give it a go, and if it's good I'll buy it when its on sale. I did the same thing for Cult of Lamb and Terminator resistance although both those games i day 1 bought after i tried the cracked version.

Only thing wrong with the game right now is the price; way too expensive. Otherwise it is very well made. Controls are responsive, there's more content then I expected, and the soundtrack is great. Naganuma takes the spotlight with his three tracks, and I wish he done a couple more. If you're a JSR/JSF fan I don't think you'd regret purchasing the game. If you're some random Joe like me who never played JSR/JSF or only played it briefly, I would recommend pirating it before buying it since the price is so damn steep.

Gotta be honest, 2023's been a good year for indie titles. Pizza Tower, Battlebit, Shadows of Doubt. If this keeps up I won't even care about AAA titles in the slightest.

I liked Jet Set Radio but I feel like for content I would have preferred 30 dollar main game with a 20 dollar DLC or 'battle pass' scenario that unlocked tracks / levels
