Using a rifle for close quarters home defense probably isn't the best option. Dude could be ducking into random rooms and while you're tunnel-vision hyper-focused and a little jumpy with the adreneline pumping, the blood pounding in your ears, you won't take notice of just how close you are to the walls that surround you. Suddenly you hear something from behind and trying to react to it do a quick 180, but end up getting the barrel stuck on the structure and then you got a knife in the gut; RIP you lost that game of Fortnite. I just think a rifle could end up being too clumsy to be optimally effective, especially if you live in a place with tight halls and narrow doorways. I personally feel that in a civilian CQC situation a decent high-capacity handgun or a short-barreled 6+1 pump-action with a cylinder choke and some 00 buckshot would be the way to go.
Granted, we're all just talking here, but realistically there probably aren't too many of us here who are expecting a black-ops or cartel type invasion of their household on a regular basis. Unless you live in a crime and drug infested, lawless shithole like Tijuana, Caracas, or St. Louis. (And no, I'm not just joking, STL is
consistently ranked more dangerous than other places like Kingston Jamaica, and all of Brazil), you probably shouldnt expect a cartel's worth of infidels or a squadron of ninjas dropping in on you at a moment's notice. For me, a good AR setup is just fine for home defense should the need ever arise, and the readily available goodies and ammo are a benefit as well. A proper larger caliber, like .308 or .300 WIN is only useful to me for larger game hunting. Steel shot pump action with a good choke is my choice for game birds. /sperg over

It is indeed fun to speculate on all of the "woulda shoulda" and other theoreticals of the situation, but realistically the ex probably had little to no experience with a gun, and was already way in over his head.
