Sometimes when an actor plays a role for a long time they'll feel like they've taken ownership of it and will get upset when they hear a reboot of the project is in the works, or that the role is being recast. But at other times the actors feel the same way Bruce Campbell feels about playing EVIL DEAD hero Ash. Feeling that he's done all he can do as the character, and being ready for some well-earned rest and relaxation, Campbell has formally retired from the role of Ash. So if the character were to return to the screen someday with a different actor in the role, that's okay with him.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Campbell said,

I'd be perfectly fine if they find some young Ash, do some new incarnation, let some other poor bastard get covered in blood. It's all good."

Although we've seen the last of Campbell playing Ash, the EVIL DEAD franchise is still expected to continue in some way after the cancellation of the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead. In fact, Campbell is providing the voice of Ash for an "immersive video game" right now, so he is still playing the character in that way.

As for more movies, Campbell said,

I hope there are very many variations of Evil Dead. You’ve got the leftover characters from the series, you’ve got the characters from the remake that we did a few years ago. You can intersect universes."

In my opinion, if they went with a younger actor, make the movie/TV series a Back To The Future/Terminator plot where the other characters go back in time and stop the deadites killing a young Ash Williams, maybe some awkwardness with the daughter ala Marty McFly.

Or you could just use the girl from the tv show who plays his daughter, she was pretty good.
the finale was pretty much setting up a Terminator ending with the main cast going on to lead society in the Deadite apocalypse, and all 3 are thirsty young actors anyway who would jump at the chance to keep doing it. Bruce Campbell Ash comes back but it's way in the Mad Max future from the international ending to Army of Darkness.

There's literally no reason why they shouldn't just continue the show's storyline with out Bruce, unless it's production rights like how they couldn't reference Army of Darkness in the first few seasons (because it's owned by Universal). Also some people still think he's just holding out for a better deal.

Honestly this is one circumstance where I'd be fine with a gender swap. If only because I think it'd be really funny to see an Ashley Williams, Jr. who's also a girl.
They actually did this in one of the comics. I forget which one honestly because there's like, a fuckton of them and it was more a filler story.
This is what I can remember off the top of my head. It's been a few months since I read it though, so it might be a bit spotty.
Basically the portal between dimensions always has an Ash standing guard and he gets the last say in what's allowed to go through. If they can best him, they can go to the mortal world for a quick haunting or whatever. All roads for every single Ash Williams leads to this portal guardian situation. Problem is, it's Ash, so of course no matter what Ash it is standing guard at the portal, nothing and no one can best him most of the time, and when they do it's a seriously fucked up situation.
Periodically different versions of Ash show up and the current "portal guy" gets to finally die or whatever so the new janitor can take over the office. And the "office" so to speak is always their greatest fear/biggest regret. So, of fucking course it's always the cabin where it all started. Only the next Ash to show up is a girl, and where Ash has his right hand cut off, the girl's left hand is a magical alien power hand that can shapeshift into weapons. She has a deadite companion that's an alien - though they get separated. There's a running joke about the alien's name that's unimportant until like, the very last fucking few panels of the comic - but anyway i digress. Through a series of wacky events with the main Ash of the comics and some time travel, she ends up becoming the next portal guardian. And her biggest fear? The deadites and evil dead win and destroy everything. Unfortunately, because this office-like place takes the shape of the greatest fear of the Ash guarding it, guess what fucking happens?
Girl Ash literally is the worst Ash to ever exist in all of the multiverse because she honestly believes she's the worst one ever to exist, and because of this everything is doomed until like, I think regular Ash and the alien deadite save the day and the alien deadite ends up being the next portal guy because his name in his alien language translates to a really long way of saying Ash. Like, its something like "that which is left after a fire" or some shit.
tl;dr aside from the girl ash from the reboot movie the only other girl ash is from the comics and girl ash is worse than an alien deadite version of ash who's version of reading from the necronomicon was really just knocking over a glowing ball of glass in a museum he was mopping in.

if Readcomiconline didn't have so many fucking popups and ads on the site i'd give ya'll a link to it. the story is weird and the regular ash parts are pretty good but girl ash on her own is just.... meh.

In other words, Campbell wasn't kidding when he said he's fucking done with the role. So it doesn't matter what they do with the franchise.

He handled it in a classy way. More reason he's a badass.

I'm sure what ever replaces it will be ham fisted sadly.

just spoonfeed me the issue numbers so I can torrent it
Just looked it up. Turns out it wasn't just filler, it was an arc all it's own that was put into a 2 volume TPB.
"Army of Darkness: Hail to the Queen, Baby!" - Volume 1
"Army of Darkness: The King is Dead, Long Live the Queen!" - Volume 2
The entire story was about 13 issues long.

It'd be worth it just to see the mary sue and the tublerinas trying to come to terms with a strong women whose a selfish philandering prick.

Ash's gender really isn't sacred. His charisma is. If you can get "Female Bruce Campbell" then you're golden.
