It’s easier to pick up an accent when you are a kid. You’ll get embarrassed when you pronounce something “wrong”. My guess is he just adopted one to fit in better, I know Asians would do that because they work in technical jobs and it’s easier than repeating themselves.

Rewatch Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, he's barely hiding the accent. I just rewatched them a couple weeks ago and was amazed by how much it stood out.

He's an American who grew up mainly in Australia. He's probably always had some slight quasi-thing that developed into an almost full bore American twang, when he did more and more majority American films.
