It's crazy to me that Honda made a mistake this basic and this easy to avoid in their effort to enshitify their cars, after 30 years of making similar small 4cyls that had no head gasket issues.
It's not that Honda doesn't know how to build an engine, but they have to make it fucked up on purpose to pass emissions & fuel economy. Thiletonomics says that the accord is most affected. My guess is that the 1.5 was developed for the civic/hrv and not intended to go into larger products, somehow it did, and now that its in a heavier vehicle, it has to work harder, possibly creating excessive boost, leading to headgasket failure.
Look at the situation with other automakers. The V6 in the tundra (which I might add was developed for the lexus LS, not a 6,000 lb truck) is supposedly having issues due to undersized crankshaft bearings and/or oiling issues. Toyota would not fuck that up other than having to reduce friction to meet emissions. Similar situation to GM. I know its not the same exact engine, but they've been making a pushrod V8 since the 50's. They didn't suddenly decide that they didn't know how to, just in their case it was a mix of trying to meet emissions/cafe by running thin oil, and trying cut corners on rod bearing and crankshaft quality.
Why do women get so angry when you ask them “why did you buy your SUV?”
not woman, but it's probably a combination of challenging the status quo, and having no interest in cars.
Some people think that a bigger vehicle means it is safer which isn't necessarily true, especially when cars have to meet more stringent safety standards than most SUVs and trucks. I was looking for a crash experiment I saw one time, it was a cabin intrusion test between a last gen tundra and a volvo product. a piece of wood or steel hit the cabin at the top of the windshied where it met the roof. The tundra deformed like a sardine can. The volvo took the impact and absorbed it, but it didn't peel the roof off.
Women also generally don't care about cars, they see them as status symbols and/or appliances. Some people would pick out their car like they would a fridge. They don't give a shit about how it works, just that it keeps food cold, is in their prefered door arangement, has the features they want, and that it matches their other appliances. If they are an "informed" consumer they might know which models have problems, but a lot of people do not care.
I would wager that there are a lot of men too that have little interest in cars and couldn't tell you what an LSD, or what diff gearing does.
I've never asked why someone bought anything to their face, but you might be asking it in a way that offends them as well. You might be asking it in a way like you are questioning their judgement, putting them on the defense.
